The Borkenberge airfield is located in the area of ​​the city of Lüdinghausen , Coesfeld district , North Rhine-Westphalia , in the triangle of Lüdinghausen, Dülmen and Haltern on the northern edge of the Borkenberge .

Aircraft up to 5700 kg, gliders, air sports equipment and helicopters operate on the Borkenberge airfield. A QDM direction finder and an airport beacon are available as approach aids .
The airfield is open during the summer from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on weekends and public holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. In winter the airfield is open from 10:00 to ECET (End of civil evening twilight). Take-offs and landings outside the opening times are possible by prior arrangement.

The Borkenberge airfield is managed by the Borkenberge-Gesellschaft e. Founded in 1931 and re-established in 1951. V. Interest group of aviation clubs in the German Aero Club e. V. operated. The so-called BBG eV is made up of nine associations based on the square, which are managed and represented externally by a jointly elected, honorary board. The approximately 400 club members move over 130 aircraft and air sports equipment.

Borkenberge was founded by the German Aero Club e. V., State Association of North Rhine-Westphalia, appointed to the state performance base gliding.

The spectator area on the airfield offers visitors the opportunity to watch the aircraft take off and land and to reach the club houses and flight school. There is also a restaurant from which you can see the airfield very well.

In recent years, the airfield has been expanded in two steps. It started with the expansion of the glider towing route and the glider runway, the towing route was extended from approx. 950 m to approx. 1100 m. The second step was the extension of the aircraft towing route and the extension of the main runway from 671 m to 875 m.

Incidents

  • On April 13, 1980, a Pützer Elster C ( aircraft registration D-EDWE ) had an accident while taking off at Borkenberge airfield. The pilot was killed; the machine was destroyed.

Politically and postally, the airfield belongs to Lüdinghausen , is geographically closest to Haltern am See and assigned to Dülmen by telephone .

From 2007 to 2012 the annual rock festival Area4 took place at the Borkenberge airfield. The number of visitors ranged from 10,000 to 23,000.

One of the most famous German air force officers and fighter pilots in World War II was Adolf Galland . He made his first flying experience in 1928 at the Borkenberge airfield.
