The airfield has a 900 m long grass runway oriented 09/27 and a separate taxiway to the north of it . The towing section for winch launching is located south of the runway . The traffic pattern for motor-powered aircraft runs north of the field. There is a separate traffic pattern for gliders, the counter-approach of which runs south of the field along Werper Straße .

The space is approved for aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of 3 tons. The approval applies to powered aircraft, powered gliders , microlight aircraft , gliders , balloons , jump parachutes and other aerial sports equipment . An increased take-off weight of up to 3.5 tons applies to helicopters .

In addition to the old hangar with restaurant and tower , which is now used for events, there are two more hangars on the square, in which the club aircraft and some private planes are housed.

When the weather is good, gliders ( winch and aircraft tow ), powered aircraft and microlight aircraft as well as parachute jumping take place every weekend . Glider pilots , air sports equipment operators and parachutists are trained in the local clubs .

history

The Schmallenberger Luftsportverein , which has existed as the DLV local group Schmallenberg since 1933 , was re-established after the Second World War on May 19, 1951 under the name Aero-Club Schmallenberg . After purchasing an aircraft, the club initially found an airfield in the Grafschafttal , which was only suitable to a limited extent. A flat airfield (so-called Rennefeld) was found between Werpe , Wormbach and Schmallenberg .

The Schmallenberger Luftsportverein leased the racing field, but then no longer had the financial means to purchase additional aircraft on their own. Because of the financial situation, the aviation club started talks with other glider groups in Meschede and Fredeburg . In 1953 the Fluggemeinschaft Rennefeld e. V., the current operator of the racing field.

On December 15, 1953, Rennefeld received approval from the aviation authority - at that time it was still a pure glider flying site with a landing area of around 180 m in length. Flight operations began on January 31, 1954. In 1957 the first hangar was opened for the gliders that had been housed in the Schützenhalle in Wormbach.

In 1961 the site was approved for powered aircraft, so that from now on it was also possible to launch aircraft tows. The first tower was built in the same year .

In 1972, the government president in Münster granted permission to expand it into a special airfield . Additional land was leased from the Wormbach parish in order to be able to extend the runway to 800 m. The airfield, now also approved for motor gliders and helicopters, was officially inaugurated in July 1976. In a second construction phase in 1979 and 1980 the construction of a larger aircraft hangar and a filling station for aviation fuel followed . In 1983 the square was extended to the east by a further 100 m and the old aircraft hangar was rebuilt in order to be able to use it for events and air camps from now on; part of it serves as a workshop. Furthermore, the place was approved for parachute jumps this year.

On November 6, 1989, a smoldering fire broke out in the new hangar , which caused great damage to the planes and hangar.

The new tower was inaugurated in 1993

A smaller aircraft hangar, in which the helicopter of the Schmallenberg textile company Falke was housed for a long time , became the property of the airline association in 1992. The building, still known today as the Falken Hall , has served as a workshop and additional storage space for aircraft since then. In the same year construction began on a new tower, which was inaugurated on June 14, 1993. The much higher and all-round glazed tower was equipped with modern technology and two additional office rooms. On the larger ground floor there is also a room for seminars, theory lessons and flight preparation . The old tower was demolished in 1996 and an annex was built in its place to expand the “Rennefeld-Stube” restaurant.

On January 8, 1996, another smoldering fire broke out in the workshop in the old hangar, in which two aircraft fuselages standing there were severely damaged.

In the summer of 2004, the Sauerland competition , which takes place every two years , the district-wide gliding competition of district 12 in the DAeC -Landesverband Nordrhein-Westfalen , was held on the Rennefeld for the fifth time .

In 2005 a photovoltaic system was installed on the roof of the old aircraft hangar . Since the forest in the area of the final approach to runway 27 on the Wormbacher Berg (between Rennefeld and Schmallenberg) had grown higher and higher in recent years and had become a not insignificant obstacle , especially when taking off in the direction of 09 , the official length of the takeoff and runway significantly shortened by the Münster district government . Several possible solutions were discussed with the forest owner until the problem finally solved itself: On January 18, 2007, the disruptive forest was completely destroyed by the devastating hurricane Kyrill . As a result, an undisturbed approach in both landing directions was now possible again and the runway could be shortened.

From June 4th to 7th, 2008, the 15th KWF conference took place on the airfield and its surroundings with around 43,000 visitors.

In 2015 the flight operations area was expanded to the east by approx. 200 meters.
