The Schempp-Hirth Discus was of Schempp-Hirth in 1984 as a successor to the standard class - glider Standard Cirrus launched. Despite its efficiency, which it also proved with several world championship titles, the Discus is also suitable for club operations or even as the first plastic single-seater in training thanks to its good-natured flight characteristics.

The body of the Discus is taken from the Ventus ; the Discus-a fuselage variant is intended for pilots up to a height of 175 cm, the variant Discus-b for taller pilots. The areas have been completely redeveloped. A special feature of this is its leading edge, which is arrowed several times.

The Discus has automatic rudder and flap connections. The brake flaps are double-decked and very effective. By loading water ballast, the surface loading can be increased up to 50 kg / m².

After the introduction of the successor Discus 2, the Discus will continue to be manufactured as Discus CS in Choceň ( Czech Republic ). The Discus 2b is used by the United States Air Force Academy under the designation TG-15B in nationwide glider competitions.
