Schempp-Hirth Janus: stagnation point and adjacent laminar flow at the fuselage-surface transition
Cockpit of the Janus B

The Schempp-Hirth Janus is described by its manufacturer Schempp-Hirth as “the first series-built two-seater high - performance glider ever”.

Its features were GRP construction, one-piece plexiglass hood and flaps .

The Janus was manufactured from 1974 to 1996. The first variant, Janus A, had GRP wings with a span of 18.2 meters and a pendulum tail unit, while the Janus B, which was manufactured from March 1978, had a damped horizontal tail unit. The Janus C and Ce variants received a wing made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic with a span of 20 meters; the Ce also received a retractable landing gear. The sliding ratio was increased from an initial 1: 39.5 to 1:43.

A self-launching motor glider  - the Janus CM, which first flew in 1978 - and a variant with a homecoming aid (Janus CT) were also developed. The last Janus CT to be built in series (registration D-KLAY) was built in 1996.

The gliding index of the different versions is between 102 and 108 points.
