The Duo Discus is a two-seat high - performance glider made by Schempp-Hirth Flugzeugbau GmbH. It has a utility approval and the XL version is now also approved for simple aerobatics . At the end of March 2010, Schempp-Hirth announced the delivery of the 600th unit of the series. The fuselage was adopted slightly modified for the Arcus .
As a replacement for the Let TG-10D , the United States Air Force Academy procured two Duo Discus X's under the designation TG-15A in 2006 to use them in gliding competitions.
Construction / versions
The Duo Discus has a wingspan of 20 meters, a wing area of 16.4 m², a retractable landing gear and can carry 200 liters of water as ballast. The curb weight is 410 kg (pure glider version) or 465 kg (with auxiliary power unit), the maximum weight for both versions is 750 kg with a glider index of 110.
The Duo Discus X was presented to the public for the first time at the Aero 2005 in Friedrichshafen . In addition to the improved chassis suspension and general aerodynamic refinements, the "X" has been provided with trailing edge flaps that are linked to the normal flap system and enable landings with a significantly steeper approach angle and reduced touchdown speed. Furthermore, the Duo Discus is now being built with winglets from Mark Maughmer .
Since 2007 the Duo Discus XL has been delivered with a fuselage that is 10 cm longer in the cockpit area. The additional length benefits the front seat. The rear seat could also be significantly enlarged by means of a stronger cranking of the front transverse power tube. Both seats are now divided by a partition so that the pilot can no longer come into contact with the pedals of the man behind. The airbrakes have also been optimized, which are now larger and more forward.
As the Duo Discus XLT , the aircraft is delivered as a turbo version with a retractable engine .
