The Stemme S10 is a self-launching glider with an auxiliary engine from the German manufacturer Stemme .

history

The prototype of the Stemme S10 took off on its maiden flight in Braunschweig in 1986 and was presented in its final form for the first time in 1987 at the AERO in Friedrichshafen. In 1990 the type certificate was granted and the first series version was delivered. In 1994 the S10-V with controllable pitch propeller received its type approval. In 1999 the Mountain Wave Project (MWP) used a Stemme S10-VT for their first research expedition in the Andes. In addition to numerous measurement flights, the first record flight to Tierra del Fuego (1546 km) was achieved. In the following years, the machine was able to set further world records in distance gliding. The highlight was a flight on November 26, 2000, when Klaus Ohlmann covered a free distance of 2,463 kilometers over three turning points in 14 hours. As part of a second MWP measurement campaign in 2006, an S10-VT (BATprobe) equipped as a research platform took the first scientific turbulence measurements over the Andes up to 12,500 m above the Tupungato- Aconcagua region. In 2014 a team from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) succeeded for the first time in an accurate 3D mapping of the Mount Everest area in Nepal with the Stemme S10-VT in order to facilitate rescue operations and to better follow the development of the glaciers. In addition, aerosol measurements, altitude-physiological measurements and data collection on wind currents were carried out. For this purpose, two Stemme with twelve stopovers in 45 flight hours were flown over 10,000 kilometers without incident from Berlin to Kathmandu. During the flights in Nepal heights of over 9,200 meters were reached.

By the end of 2019, around 260 of these machines had been produced in different versions. The Stemme S10 belongs to the open competition class as a glider and has an index of 110 on the glider index list .

construction

The aircraft is a single-engine, two-seater shoulder - wing aircraft in FRP construction with a conventional T-tail unit , the wings of which are equipped with flaps and Schempp-Hirth airbrakes on the top and winglets and can be folded by one person. The pilots sit next to each other. The main landing gear can be retracted electrically and the tail wheel is controlled. The propeller of the V and VT versions is electrically adjustable, the engine of the VT version has a turbocharger .

When not in use, the propeller folds under the bow fairing, also known as the propeller dome, which is designed to be displaceable in the longitudinal direction and thus opens or closes a circumferential gap for the propeller. The propeller is driven by an internal combustion engine installed behind the cockpit via a remote shaft and a reduction gear. Many specimens have a solar panel to recharge the avionic battery in flight.

  • S10-VT (from 1998): Rotax 914F2 / S1, retractable controllable pitch propeller, 23 m span (production discontinued)
  • S10-VTX : Air work aircraft based on the S10-VT, equipped for research and test flights with external load containers (max. 60 kg per side) on the underside of the wing.
  • S12 : revised version of the S10-VT with increased wingspan and take-off mass. The type certification was granted in 2016.

In the USA, the S10 was also known as "Chrysalis". Two Stemme S10V designated as TG-11A were used from 1995 to 2002 by the US Air Force Academy as cross-country trainers and at air shows. The ICAO Aircraft Type Designator for all S10 versions is S10S.
