The German Meteorological Society e. V. ( DMG ) has set itself the goal of promoting the science of meteorology and disseminating meteorological knowledge. The DMG also represents the interests of physical oceanography.

history

The German Meteorological Society was founded on November 18, 1883 in what was then the Deutsche Seewarte in Hamburg-Sankt Pauli . After 1945, four regional meteorological societies were established in the western occupation zones of Germany, which on March 27, 1974 became a registered association, the "Deutsche Meteorologische Gesellschaft e. V. “(DMG). This new DMG is the legal successor to the "Association of German Meteorological Societies", which was founded in 1964. In 1991, after German reunification , the GDR Meteorological Society was added.

activities

The DMG offers a forum for scientific information and discussion. It is not only open to meteorologists, but to everyone who wants to support the goals of DMG. An important priority is the promotion of young scientists.

The DACH meteorological conferences take place every three years and are held together with the Swiss Society for Meteorology (SGM) and the Austrian Society for Meteorology (ÖGM) . In 2015 and 2018, DMG, together with partners, organized the German Climate Conference. In addition, DMG supports other national and international conferences. Since 1999 she has been a member of the European Meteorological Society (EMS).

Together with the SGM and the ÖGM, the DMG publishes the Meteorological Journal . Another contribution to the dissemination of meteorological knowledge is the publication of the “Meteorological Calendar”, which, in addition to attractive photos, contains extensive information on topics that change annually in German and English.

The DMG takes a position on current technical issues. In 2015, on the occasion of the 10th German Climate Conference in Hamburg, it issued an updated statement on climate change. a. with the statement that the warming trend is unbroken and the human influence on climate change is becoming more and more evident.

DMG promotes the quality of meteorological services by awarding the "Recognized Advisory Meteorologist" certificate and offering a recognition procedure for quality standards in weather advisory services.

Regional and technical breakdown

The DMG is regionally divided into six sections that offer training events and excursions in all parts of Germany.

Special technical topics are dealt with in depth in specialist committees. There are currently the following specialist committees:

  • Biometeorology
  • Energy meteorology
  • History of meteorology
  • Hydrometeorology
  • Environmental meteorology
  • Young DMG

Awards and honors

The DMG awards the DMG Sponsorship Prize , the Alfred Wegener Medal , the Albert Defant Medal , the Reinhard Süring Plaque and the Paulus Prize for special scientific achievements . She is also involved in awarding the Georgi Prize of the GeoUnion Alfred Wegener Foundation .

Chairwoman of the Executive Board since 1974
