The Meteorological Journal , MZ for short, is a peer-reviewed scientific journal for meteorology and climatology .

The forerunner of the MZ was founded in 1866 by the Austrian Society for Meteorology , the MZ in 1884. From 1886 the publication took place together with the German Meteorological Society . After a re-establishment by the meteorological societies of Germany, Austria and Switzerland , the magazines Meteorologische Rundschau and Zeitschrift für Meteorologie were merged in 1992 . Since January 2000, the contributions to the physics of the atmosphere (cited as: Contributions to Atmospheric Physics ) have been published in the Meteorological Journal.

Although the journal is published by the meteorological societies of the mainly German-speaking countries, the articles are generally written in English.

The Impact Factor of the Meteorological Journal in 2015 was 1.914. In the statistics of the Science Citation Index , the journal was ranked 39th out of 84 considered journals in the category "Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences". It has been an open access magazine since 2014 .
