GeoUnion Alfred Wegener Foundation

The GeoUnion Alfred Wegener Foundation is a non-profit foundation under civil law; it also forms the umbrella organization for all geoscientific associations in Germany. The seat is in Potsdam , at the Institute for Geosciences of the University of Potsdam . Currently (February 2015) the foundation is supported by 36 geoscientific oriented organizations (so-called sponsoring institutions); it represents more than 50,000 members.

history

In 1980 the "Alfred Wegener Foundation for the Promotion of Geosciences (AWS)" was established as a merger of initially twelve geoscientific societies. In 2004 it was renamed to its current name. The foundation was named after the German scientist Alfred Wegener (1880–1930), who laid the foundation for today's geoscientific world view of a dynamic earth with his hypothesis about continental drift .

purpose

The foundation under civil law pursues charitable interests. It has set itself the goal of promoting science, research and teaching in the field of geosciences and communicating its findings to the general public, as well as promoting interdisciplinary cooperation between the more than one hundred individual disciplines. With the expertise available in the supporting organizations, the GeoUnion is primarily dedicated to tasks related to the use of natural resources and the protection of the environment. The GeoUnion is financed from income from the foundation's assets, through grants from the GeoUnion e. V. and from donations from members and third parties.

Programs

The GeoUnion Alfred Wegener Foundation is the amalgamation of geoscientific research institutions and associations in Germany and is in charge of awarding the title " National GeoPark ".
