The Association of German School Geographers (VDSG) is a non-profit association for geographic education and sustainability education in Germany. The association is part of the German Geography Society . V. (DGfG).

history

The association is the oldest specialist teacher association in Germany. It was founded on January 1, 1912 after long organizational preparatory work by Hermann Haack in Gotha . After it was dissolved in 1935, the VDSG was re-established in 1949 in Jugenheim (Bergstrasse) .

For some years now, the association has been calling itself an association for "sustainability education" instead of (earlier name) "environmental education". The term "sustainability" encompasses the cornerstones of ecology, economy and social issues and is thus far more extensive than "environment".

The association is the specialist and interest group for geographic education and sustainability education in all school types and educational areas in Germany. He advocates geographic and sustainability education vis-à-vis the public as well as authorities and institutions. He supports the development of geography didactics in all types of schools, advises those interested in all questions relating to teaching in the school subject geography (geography, natural phenomena, natural science and technology, social and economic studies, economics, geology).

The association demands continuous instruction in the school subject geography (geography) in all school types and grade levels. It informs its members through the newsletters of the regional associations. The state associations correspond to the states of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The association promotes the advanced training of subject teachers in geography (geography) in the countries of Germany through regional advanced training events and excursions as well as regional school geography days, which are open to all members and interested parties. He supports and organizes working groups on didactic and content-related topics, arranges professional contacts (network in development) and plays a key role in the preparation and implementation of the "German Geographers' Day - Congress for Science, School and Practice". three years in German-speaking countries. The VDSG arranges and organizes training excursions all over the world.

The association is involved in the international geographic community through its membership in the DGfG , which in turn is a member of the German geoscientific as well as European and international geographic associations. The VDSG now has around 5,000 members nationwide. It is represented in every Land of the Federal Republic with an independent regional association.
