The German Society for Polar Research (DGP) was founded in 1926 as an archive for polar research in Kiel and was given its current name in 1959. The society promotes research into the polar and ice regions and promotes young scientists. Since 1931 she has published the journal Polarforschung (today together with the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research ).

The society awards the Weyprecht Medal at irregular intervals for outstanding scientific achievements in the polar regions .

The society has around 500 members, including around 40 corporate members. Subject-specific questions are discussed in working groups and new programs are suggested. There are currently working groups for:

Since 1951 the society has organized international polar conferences every two to three years. The 27th International Polar Conference took place in Rostock in 2018 .
