Georg Otto Walter Kleinschmidt (born January 3, 1938 in Berlin ) is a German emeritus for geology . He devoted himself to polar research .

Life

Kleinschmidt is the son of the zoologist Adolf Theodor Otto Kleinschmidt (1904–1999) and the doctor Marianne Kleinschmidt born. Claus. His grandfather was the ornithologist Otto Kleinschmidt .

After graduating from high school in 1958, Kleinschmidt began studying geology in Tübingen and graduated there in June 1965 after a short stay in Würzburg . In Tübingen he joined the Scotland team.

Kleinschmidt was involved in numerous expeditions to the Antarctic , including the GANOVEX expeditions I-III and V-VIII. The Kleinschmidt cliffs in the East Antarctic Viktorialand are named after him.

In 1983 he founded the working group geology of the polar regions of the German Society for Polar Research with Hubert Miller and Dieter K. Fütterer . From 1996 to 2010 he was chairman of the German Society for Polar Research .
