Adam Matysek (born July 19, 1968 in Piekary Śląskie , Poland ) is a former Polish football goalkeeper , goalkeeping coach and current sports director .

Career as a player

In the club

The goalkeeper comes from the youth of Zagłębie Wałbrzych . In 1988 he moved to local rival Górnik Wałbrzych for a year , then returned to Zagłębie. After he became the goalkeeper of the Polish U21 national team , he moved to the Polish first division club Śląsk Wrocław in 1989 .

After relegation in 1993, on the recommendation of Jacek Jarecki , the former goalkeeper of SC Fortuna Köln , he went to Germany in the 2nd Bundesliga for Cologne Fortuna as the successor to Uwe Zimmermann . He quickly developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the second division before a cruciate ligament tear in October 1994 put him out of action for twelve months. After that he was no longer able to assert himself as a goalkeeper and therefore played for FC Gütersloh from summer 1996 . Coach Hannes Linßen knew the Polish national goalkeeper from Cologne. After brief skepticism in the FC Gütersloh environment, he quickly established himself, initially contributed to the Gütersloh relegation and in his second season his parades were one reason why the FC played long for promotion to the 1st Bundesliga . What the Güterslohern was denied, Matysek succeeded shortly afterwards. On the first match day of the 1998/99 season he played for Gütersloh, but was then unexpectedly signed by Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a fee of DM 2,000,000, as regular goalkeeper Dirk Heinen was out there. He initially played all of the season's games and was runner-up with Bayer 04.

After mistakes in the Champions League against Lazio Rome and Dynamo Kiev , however, he lost his regular place to Frank Juric , whom he was able to replace again due to illness. However, he remained controversial and had to deal with Pascal Zuberbühler in his third season , who eventually replaced him.

Matysek returned to Poland in 2001 after a total of 118 appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga and 78 in the 1st Bundesliga. He first played in the preliminary round as a substitute goalkeeper for Zagłębie Lubin , but moved to RKS Radomsko for the second half . After this season he ended his active career in 2002. In total, he played 136 games in the first division of Poland .

In the national team

On December 3, 1991, he played his first international match for the Polish national football team against Egypt . In total, he played 34 times for Poland's national team and was also part of the squad at the 2002 World Cup .

Career as a coach

From July 1, 2005 to July 2014, Adam Matysek worked as a goalkeeping coach at 1. FC Nürnberg until he terminated his contract for personal reasons. Since November 2016 he has been the sports director of the Polish first division club Śląsk Wrocław .
