Pascal Zuberbühler (born January 8, 1971 in Frauenfeld ), called Zubi , is a former Swiss football player . He was u. a. Active in Germany and England and goalkeeper for the Swiss national football team until the 2008 European Football Championship . In his career he won six championship titles with his club teams, three cup wins and four times participation in the Champions League. He has been a goalkeeping coach since his retirement (currently at Derby County ).

Career

society

Between 1991 and 1999 Zuberbühler played for Grasshopper Zurich and completed 187 games for the club, winning the Swiss league three times and the Swiss Cup once . He then moved to FC Basel , with whom he won other championships and cups. At Basel he impressed with good performances, in the league, cup and also in the Champions League , but was also criticized for some mistakes. In the summer of 2000 Zuberbühler was loaned to Bayer 04 Leverkusen , who was coached by Christoph Daum . After a few months he was pushed out of the gate by Adam Matysek under the new coach Berti Vogts . Since he was now being whistled by his own fans, he decided in March 2001 to leave Leverkusen. This was followed by a short loan to FC Aarau until he returned to Basel and played there until 2006.

In the summer of 2006 he moved to West Bromwich Albion in England . Initially he performed well under coach Bryan Robson . After 15 games he was taken from the first team by the new coach Tony Mowbray , also due to negative fan reactions. After regular goalkeeper Russell Hoult had been suspended, Zuberbühler initially returned to the first team. After the engagement of Dean Kiely as the new number one, Zuberbühler did not play a game for West Bromwich.

Since Zuberbühler saw his chances in the national team with regard to the Euro 2008 as threatened, he decided to move. In the summer of 2007 he moved to Neuchâtel Xamax and signed a contract for 18 months. After a year he returned to England in August 2008 when he got a contract with Fulham FC . There he was never used in his first two seasons apart from a single game in the League Cup and was a substitute goalkeeper behind Mark Schwarzer . After the 2010/11 season he ended his active career and became a goalkeeping coach.

In 2014 and 2015 he was under contract with Servette FC Genève as technical director.

National team

Zuberbühler made his senior team debut on September 6, 1994 against the United Arab Emirates , but was rarely used in the following years.

He was a regular goalkeeper for the national team from 2004 to 2007 and played 51 international matches. The highlight was participation in the 2006 World Cup . There, Switzerland stayed clean in all group matches . After the round of 16 went to penalties after a 0-0 penalty, Zuberbühler saved the first penalty. However, Ukraine won as Switzerland failed to convert a penalty. It was the first time that a team without conceding was eliminated from a World Cup. In February 2008, the then Swiss national coach Jakob Kuhn decided that Zuberbühler was only number two in Switzerland's squad for the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland and that Diego Benaglio would be in the Swiss goal during the tournament.

On the occasion of the third preliminary round match against Portugal on June 15, 2008, which was only a farewell game for the Swiss national team, Kuhn Zuberbühler played one last time. The game, which Switzerland won 2-0, was his 51st and last in the national team's jersey.

After the career

Zuberbühler is responsible for FIFA 's goalkeeper training worldwide . He is also an expert for the pay TV channel Teleclub for the Swiss league and the Champions League.

Private

Zuberbühler is married to the Spaniard Beatriz.
