Anthony Mark "Tony" Mowbray (born November 22, 1963 in Saltburn-by-the-Sea , England ) is a former English football player and current coach .

Player career

Middlesbrough FC

When Tony Mowbray started his career in Middlesbrough , his club had just been relegated from the Football League First Division in 1981/82 . The club had to struggle with considerable financial difficulties in the following years and the crash into the third division also took place. Under the new coach Bruce Rioch managed to return to the Second Division in the 1986/87 season. The team around Mowbray, Colin Cooper and Gary Pallister even managed to march straight through to the English premier league in the following season. The return to the Football League First Division in 1988/89 was short-lived, however, because the club rose directly from a third from bottom place in the table. After the team also played in the second division against relegation Rioch was dismissed and replaced by Colin Todd . After a better running season 1990/91 with rank 7 Tony Mowbray moved to Scotland in 1991 to Celtic Glasgow . During the nine years at Middlesbrough, Mowbray was very popular with the fans and was one of the club's best players.

Celtic Glasgow

His work in Glasgow was overshadowed by the death of his wife. In terms of sport, his time at Celtic did not remain in good memories either. In the championship, the team always had to admit defeat to local rivals Glasgow Rangers . Mowbray made 78 league appearances and scored 6 goals in four years. In 1995 he returned to England to Ipswich Town .

Ipswich Town

Ipswich had just been relegated from the Premier League in 1994/95 and thus started in the second division. It was only in his last season that the team around team captain Tony Mowbray managed to return to the Premier League 2000/01 . After promotion, he ended his playing career at the age of 36.

Coaching career

After four years in the coaching staff of Ipswich Town , he took over the coaching position at the Scottish first division club Hibernian Edinburgh in 2004 . In his first season he led his team to third place in the table behind the overpowering Glasgow Rangers and Celtic Glasgow . Thus, the club was eligible to start in the UEFA Cup 2005/06 , but failed there in the first round to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk . Also in the 2005/06 season Mowbray led his team to a good fourth place in the table before he returned to England during the 2006/07 season to train West Bromwich Albion .

Mowbray replaced Bryan Robson at West Brom. Once again he moved to a team that had been relegated from the first division the year before. After a good season that led to fourth place in the regular season, his new team only failed in the play-off final with 0: 1 at Derby County . This setback, however, the club digested quickly and confidently rose in the 2007/08 season as a table first in the Premier League on. There Mowbray's successful activities in West Bromwich ended . The club was relegated at the end of the season as the last from the Premier League 2008/09 and he took over the coaching post at Celtic Glasgow a little later .

The season in the Scottish Premier League 2009/10 fell well short of expectations. As in his time as a player, Mowbray was unable to leave city rivals Glasgow Rangers behind as a coach . In addition, the club lost an unusually large number of games under his leadership. On March 25, 2010 his work in Glasgow ended prematurely.

On October 26, 2010 he took over the coaching position at Middlesbrough FC in the Football League Championship 2010/11 . At this point, contrary to expectations, Middlesbrough did not play for promotion, but found himself in the lower third of the table. This led to the sacking of coach Gordon Strachan and the signing of former player Tony Mowbray.

After the start of the 2013/14 season did not go as expected, the club split from Tony Mowbray on October 21, 2013.
