Mika-Matti Petteri "Mixu" Paatelainen (born February 3, 1967 in Helsinki ) is a former football player and today's coach. With 70 international matches and 18 international goals, Paatelainen is the eighth most frequently used Finnish international and the third most successful goalscorer.
With Mikko and Markus he has two younger brothers who are also active as soccer players. Her father Matti Paatelainen (* 1944) was a successful and dangerous soccer player who also acted as a regular in the Finnish national team. His twin brother Heikki , the uncle of the three brothers, was also active as a soccer player, but was unable to follow up on his brother's great successes.
Career
player
In October 1987 Paatelainen signed a contract with Scottish club Dundee United and moved to the island for £ 100,000 from Finnish club Haka . 1988 was Footballer of the Year in Finland . In 1992 he switched to league rivals FC Aberdeen . Paatelainen had been the season's best shooter twice for Dundee United. When he in 1994 in the 1,992 newly formed Premier League to Bolton Wanderers moved, he was the first Finnish player who played in this league. In 1997 he moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers , stayed here for only a year due to a disappointing season in which the Wolves finished ninth in the second division but Paatelainen did not score a single goal in 22 games and then returned to Scotland . Between 1998 and 2001 he played for Hibernian Edinburgh . In 2001 he was signed by Racing Strasbourg , where the Finns only lasted one year. Between 2002 and the end of his career in 2005, he always played for one year at a Scottish club. First he returned to the Hibs in 2002, then he played with FC St. Johnstone between 2003 and 2004 and between 2004 and 2005 he was under contract with FC St. Mirren , where he ended his career as an active.
Trainer
During his last positions as a player Paatelainen had already worked as a coach, in 2005 he took over his first head coaching position at the fourth division FC Cowdenbeath . The Finn signed his brothers Mikko (* 1980), a striker, and Markus (* 1983), an attacking midfielder. In his only season at Cowdenbeath, he was first and rose to the third division . In 2006 he was hired as a coach at a Finnish club, Turku PS . He finished third in 2007 and qualified for the UI Cup with his team . On January 10, 2008, Paatelainen Hibernian took over Edinburgh , who at the time had only won one of their last ten games.
There he experienced a mixed time and finally had to leave the club again at the end of the 2008/09 season after leading the Hibs in 6th place.
In spring 2011 Paatelainen took over the Finnish national team . He was allowed to hold the office for a good four years before a series of defeats lasting several months caused the national football association to end the cooperation in June 2015 and to dismiss Paatelainen.
In October 2015, Paatelainen succeeded Jackie McNamara as the new manager of Dundee United . He played for the club in his active career between 1987 and 1992. The contract was terminated on May 4, 2016.
