Hans Backe (born February 14, 1952 ) is a former Swedish football player . Following his active career, which he mainly denied in the lower Swedish league area, he became a football coach . He was last coach of the Finnish national team in 2016 .

Career

From underclass player to first division coach

Backe played at AIK in the youth. With the youth team, he won the Sankt Erikscupen in 1966 alongside Leif Karlsson and Gerry Rehn . He later moved up to the club's reserve team. In 1972 he was part of the squad of the first team in the Allsvenskan , but was not used. Therefore he switched to the lower class Bro IK . He later played for IF Brommapojkarna and Spånga IS .

In 1982 Backe took over his first coaching post at Djurgårdens IF after the club had been relegated from Allsvenskan the previous year. In Division 1 Norra succeeded in winning the relay straight away, but in the following relegation games he failed with the team at his former club AIK. After the promotion was missed in the following two seasons, the club replaced him in 1984 by Björn Westerberg . He then moved to the Norwegian club Molde FK . After one season, his contract was terminated because the club could still not afford a full-time coach.

Backe returned to Sweden for the Allsvenskan season in 1987 and took over training at the first division club Hammarby IF . After a sixth place in the first year, the team missed relegation the following year and Cheek was again on leave. The new employer was then the second division Östers IF , which rose straight away to the Allsvenskan in 1989 and reached the championship finals as fourth in the first division season in 1990 . There he failed with the team in the semifinals at IFK Norrköping after a 4: 3 home win by a 1: 2 upward defeat due to the away goals rule . After he had to compete with the team the following year in the relegation round, which ended without defeat as leaders, he reached the championship round again with the club in the 1992 season as runner-up. In the series, which has now been played in league mode, he reached third place with the team.

After another season at Östers IF, which ended as eighth in the table, his former club AIK recruited him. At the Solnaer Klub he inherited Tommy Söderberg , who had switched to Svenska Fotbollförbundet . He led the team in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup in the second round, in which they failed after two defeats at AC Parma , the eventual winner of the competition. In the summer of 1995 he reached the cup final with the team, which was lost 3-1 to Halmstads BK. After he had only managed sixth and eighth place in the league, he was replaced by his assistant Erik Hamrén after the end of the 1995 season .

Moved abroad and won the championship in Denmark

In 1996 Backe returned to Norway and was a coach at Stabæk Fotball in the Tippeligaen . In the following years he reached midfield positions in the league with the team around Petter Belsvik , Arild Stavrum and Frode Olsen . In 1998 he accepted an offer from the Danish club Aalborg BK in the Superliga and handed the Norwegian club over to his compatriot Anders Linderoth . In the 1998/99 season he led the club to its first title win when the team won the national championship before Brøndby IF .

In June 2000 Backe went to SV Austria Salzburg , which he looked after until September 2001. He then signed on to FC Copenhagen . With the club he won two more championships in 2004 and 2005 and moved into the 2004/05 Royal League final, which was won on penalties against IFK Göteborg . On December 31, 2005, the club replaced him with Ståle Solbakken . At the end of April 2006 he signed a contract with the Greek club Panathinaikos Athens . He was released early after four months.

Cooperation with Sven-Göran Eriksson

In the 2007/08 season backe joined together with Tord Grip as assistant coach at the English club Manchester City coached by his compatriot Sven-Göran Eriksson in the Premier League . After the joint dismissal, he continued working as an assistant coach for the Mexican national team. While Grip Eriksson followed to Notts County , Backe remained without a club after being released in April 2009. In October, his first coaching station Djurgårdens IF reported interest in a commitment as an employee of Andrée Jeglertz , but he declined.

On October 27, 2009 Backe Eriksson followed to Notts County and took over the club's coaching post. After only a few weeks, he resigned as a coach on December 15, 2009. The reason for this was a dispute over unpaid salaries.

In the United States

On January 11, 2010 Backe took over the coaching position with the New York Red Bulls in the United States from the then interim coach Richie Williams . In his first season he won the MLS Eastern Conference with the team around Juan Pablo Ángel , Dane Richards , Salou Ibrahim and Joel Lindpere . In the quarterfinals of the play-offs for the championship win, however, she was eliminated from San José Earthquakes despite a 1-0 home victory with a 1: 3 defeat. After the team had not made it through the Conference semifinals in the following two years, his contract, which expired at the end of 2012, was not extended.

Finnish national coach

Backe became the successor of Mixu Paatelainen coach of the Finnish national team , who was dismissed in summer 2015 ; he had applied for an advertisement from the Finnish Football Association. His first game as national coach on January 10, 2016 in Abu Dhabi ended with a 3-0 defeat against the Swedish selection .

The international match year 2016 turned out to be less than satisfactory for the Finnish selection. Out of 11 games in the era of Hans Backe, 9 ended in a defeat and only two in a draw. As a result of this, Backe was dismissed from the Finnish Association in December 2016.
