Gábor Obitz , also known under the names Gábor Óbecsei and Gábor Ormai (born January 18, 1899 , † March 20, 1953 ), was a Hungarian football player and football coach .

Club career

Obitz began his career at the Ferencvárosi Torna Club , where the technically skilled middle and side runner won his first title in 1922 when the Franzensstädter beat the Újpesti TE in the cup final. The following year he moved to Czechoslovakia, where he played for Makkabi Brno . At that time the Maccabi had put together a very strong team, which mainly consisted of Hungarian legionnaires. In 1924, however, the club got into considerable difficulties with the association, as it had a number of non-Jewish players - like Obitz - in its ranks.

He left the club and continued his career in northern Germany, where he worked for Holstein Kiel . There he was able to win the North German Cup in 1925 before the double succeeded in the following season. As the North German champions, the team also played in the final round of the German championship, where they advanced to the semi-finals and lost 1: 3 to later champions SpVgg Fürth .

After that, Obitz returned to Hungary, where professional football had now been introduced, and played again for the FTC. Under the coach István Tóth-Potya , the team around Márton Bukovi , Vilmos Kohut and József Takács won the double twice in a row. In 1928 the Mitropacup could also be won, although Obitz was not in the final eleven. In 1931 he ended his active career.

National team

He had his first appearance in the national team in November 1921 in a 4-2 draw against Sweden , but was then unable to conquer a regular place. On the occasion of the Olympic Games in 1924 , the Hungarian federation also called up its players who were active abroad and so Obitz came to two missions in the position of the left runner. However, the Hungarians were eliminated in the second round by a 3-0 draw against Egypt .

After his return to Hungary Obitz was used again in the national team and this time he came to regular appearances before he played his last game in April 1930 against Switzerland . In total he came to 15 missions for Hungary.

Coaching career

His first station as a coach was the Romanian club AMEF Arad , which he looked after in the 1931/32 season. Obitz then worked for the Turkish Association for two years before coaching the Yugoslav club NK Ljubljana in 1936 . In 1939 he became the coach of the Finnish national team . After the Second World War he was in charge of Zuglói AC .
