Career
Career as a player
Baxter began his playing career in 1971 with the English club Preston North End , where he signed his first professional contract in 1973 at the age of twenty. The midfielder quickly became a regular in the second and third English leagues. After a brief interlude at Morecambe FC in the Northern Premier League , he moved to the Scottish first division club Dundee United . There he was not used and returned to Stockport County in England in 1976 . But here too, Baxter would only have one season.
In 1978 he continued his career in Australia . He played 50 appearances in just one season for South Melbourne FC . In 1981 he moved to Helsingborgs IF in Sweden , and two years later to the United States with the San Diego Gauchos . At the end of his playing career he returned to Sweden, where he joined the then second division Örebro SK . After two seasons in which the club had missed the return to the Allsvenskan , he ended his active career in 1984.
Career as a coach
In 1985 Baxter began his coaching career at his former play station Örebro SK, where he replaced Roy Hodgson, who had migrated to Malmö FF . The next year he moved to the lower class Norwegian club IF Skarp . The following year he trained Vitória Setúbal in Portugal . But in 1988 he returned to Sweden and worked at Halmstads BK , which he led to Allsvenskan . After relegation in 1991, he left the club for Japan . There Sanfrecce Hiroshima became his new employer. In 1994 he celebrated his greatest success as a coach with the first half of the season. Shortly thereafter, he signed with league rival Vissel Kobe . Then came back to Sweden again, this time to AIK. With the 1998 championship he won his first coaching title. The cup victory followed shortly afterwards. In his second season he even led the club into the UEFA Champions League . In the group stage they measured themselves against the big clubs FC Barcelona , FC Arsenal and Fiorentina , but finished last without a win.
In 2001 he coached the Norwegians from Lyn Oslo before serving the England U-19 national team for two years . He then became the national coach of South Africa , but missed qualifying for the finals of the 2006 World Cup . Thereupon returned to Kobe to Vissel. After a few months, however, he moved to Helsingborgs IF in Sweden. Surprisingly, he survived the group stage of the UEFA Cup with the club and won the Swedish Cup.
In 2008 he became the national coach of Finland . Although he did not qualify for the 2010 World Cup , his contract was extended by two years. A position as sporting director at Celtic Glasgow did not materialize in June 2010. After the first three qualifying games for the 2012 European Football Championship were all lost, Baxter was fired.
In the fall of 2010, Baxter was temporarily under discussion as a coach at AIK, ultimately the club hired former player Andreas Alm as head coach and engaged Baxter in an advisory capacity to support the coaching team and the sporting management.
In June 2015, Baxter became the coach of the Turkish first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara . After he started the new season with two defeats, he dissolved his contract after mutual agreement with the club management and left the club again.
