The SuperSport United Football Club is a South African football club from Pretoria . His first team plays in the Premier Soccer League and was South African champions three times in a row from 2008 to 2010. The club's nickname among its fans is Matsatsantsa a Pitori .

history

The club was founded in 1985 as Pretoria City FC and played in the highest South African league when it was bought in 1994 by the television provider M-Net , which operates the South African sports channel SuperSport. The new owners signed a number of well-known local players; the team was initially relegated to the second division. Here a new successful team could be formed, which already reached the South African Cup final as second division champions in 1995, but lost 3-2 to the national champions Cape Town Spurs .

Back in the top division, the club was renamed SuperSport United in 1996. Here the team has continuously worked its way to the top. In 1999 SuperSport won the cup final against Kaizer Chiefs . Since 2001 there has been a close collaboration with the Dutch honorary division Feyenoord from Rotterdam ; they later formed a partnership with the English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur .

Also in 2001, the team was able to place in the top eight of the Premier Soccer League for the first time, finished second in the following two seasons and qualified for the African Champions League for the first time in 2003 . After further placings in third and second place, the first championship for SuperSport followed in 2008; in the two following seasons they were able to successfully defend the title.
