Bongani Khumalo [ bɔŋˈgani kʰuˈmalɔ ] (born January 6, 1987 in Manzini , Swaziland ) is a South African football player .

Career

Khumalo was born in Swaziland, but his family moved to Pretoria when he was a child . In his youth he trained with Arcadia Shepherds , a club known for promoting young talent. Between 2005 and 2007 Khumalo played for the second division Pretoria University before moving to the Premier Soccer League for Supersport United in the summer of 2007 .

At Supersport he established himself in defense alongside Ricardo Katza and Morgan Gould . The central defender, who has a strong header, is also dangerous in set pieces and scored a total of seven goals in his first two seasons. In both 2008 and 2009 he won the national championship with Supersport. In 2009 he was honored as Young Player of the season by the PSL .

In March 2008 he made his debut for the South African national team in a friendly against Zimbabwe. He was called into the squad for the Confederations Cup 2009 by national coach Joel Santana , but was not used during the tournament.

In January 2011, Khumalo moved to Tottenham Hotspur . In late March 2011 he was loaned to Preston North End in the second-rate Football League Championship . In six missions he could not prevent the relegation of his team. So Khumalo initially returned to Tottenham for the 2011/12 season, but was then awarded to Reading FC for the entire season in the Football League Championship . After four appearances in the league and one in the Carling Cup , he returned to his home club early in January 2012.

On July 18, 2012 he was loaned to the Greek first division club PAOK Thessaloniki for one season. For the 2013/14 season, Khumalo was loaned to the Doncaster Rovers . In the spring of 2015 he played on loan at Colchester United . His contract at Tottenham expired at the end of the 2014/15 season.
