PAOK Thessaloniki ( Greek ΠΑΟΚ , also PAOK, acronym for Panthessalonikischer Sportklub der Konstantinopler , Greek Πανθεσσαλονίκειος Αθλητικός Όμιλος Κωνσταντιλος Κωνσταντιλος Κωνσταντιλος Κωνσταντιλος Κωνσταντιλος Κωνσταντιλος ωνσταντιλος ωνστανταντινουπολιτilos from Thessaloniki is a football club from Thessaloniki , also known as PAOK, Thessaloniki , a football club of Thessaloniki, from Thessaloniki , a football club of Thessaloniki, Greece is a football club of Constantinople . The team was founded in 1926 by expelled Greeks from Constantinople . PAOK is one of the three teams that have never been relegated since the introduction of the unified Greek first division (Alpha Ethniki) in the 1959/60 season and have therefore always played in the Greek first division.

history

The founding years (1926–1958)

One of PAOK's first teams in 1926.

The beginnings (1926–1948)

PAOK Thessaloniki sees itself as the successor to the Hermes Club Pera (Greek: Ερμής ), founded in 1875 in the Istanbul district of Pera , which had to cease its activities as a result of the persecution of the Greeks and the related expulsions after the Greco-Turkish War . The expellees founded the PAOK association in Thessaloniki on April 20, 1926. The team's emblem is the double-headed eagle , the coat of arms of the Byzantine Empire . However, he put on the wings out of mourning over the loss of his homeland. The club color black stands for this mourning, the white for the hope for a better future. The club's first coat of arms was a four-leaf clover. On each individual shamrock there was a letter of the association, which was framed by a horseshoe. Only after the merger with AEK Thessaloniki in 1929 did the club get the Doppelkopf-Adler. The first president of the association was Triantafilos Triantafillidis . PAOK played its first unofficial game on May 4, 1926 at Thermaikos Stadium, beating Megas Alexandros Thessaloniki 2-1. The first official game took place on December 12, 1926. Nea Genea could be beaten 3-1. In the 1930/31 season PAOK debuted in the Pan-Hellenic Championship and played for the first time against Olympiacos . At the end of the season they were in 5th place. In 1937 the club won its first trophy. The club won the first Thessaloniki city championship and qualified as a result for the Greek championship, which ended with second place.

Konstantinos Andreadis was PAOK's first coach

The first coach Konstantinos "Kostas" Andreadis sat in the dugout for five years, for which he received no financial compensation.

The club's first captain was Michalis Ventourelis .

The first foreign player was a Frenchman named Raymond Etienne , who was also the first professional of the club and thus all of Greece. On September 5, 1928, he became the first footballer in Greece to sign a professional contract that earned him a salary of 4,000 drachmas. Etienne played his first game for PAOK on November 15, 1928 against Thermaikos, in which he contributed two goals to victory. In total, Etienne played for the club for six years and scored a record 38 goals in 44 games.

The club's first foreign coach was the Austrian Rudolf Gassner , who coached the team in the 1931/32 season.

On October 20, 1940, the club played its last competitive game for the Thessaloniki city championship against Makedonikos, which they won 2-1. Only a week later Greece joined on the side of the Allies in the Second World War one. The club's players have also been signed by the Greek armed forces . Two of the players at the time died in the war, goalkeeper Nikos Sotiriadis and defender Georgios Watikis. On November 17, 1940, Watikis was the first to fall at the age of 22. Sotiriadis fell at the front on January 28, 1941, at the age of 32.

The Thessaloniki City Championships (1948–1958)

After the Second World War , the first youth departments were created and the club was able to gain additional quality through transfers. This resulted in four Thessaloniki football championships in the 1950s. As football was still organized locally, the city championship of Thessaloniki counted as a great success.

By 1955, the club was able to qualify a total of three times for the final of the Greek Cup . In all three games, however, PAOK could not win the game. The first final for the Greek Cup was played by PAOK against AEK Athens in 1939 in the Nikos Goumas Stadium . It was lost 1: 2, but photos and reports of the time show that football was perceived as a game and less as a commercialized event. Players and officials embraced after the final and, in contrast to later times, were on friendly terms.

The era of Georgios Koudas (1958–1985)

Captain and legend of the club, Georgios Koudas

Georgios Pantelakis (1960-1971 & 1975-1984)

From 1960 to 1971 Georgios Pantelakis held the office of the so-called general secretary on the board, a function which today can be compared to that of a sports director . He was able to successfully prevent Olympiacos from signing Piraeus Koudas. His statement "I might end up in Gyaros (island of exile and prison during the years of the military junta ), but Koudas will not play at Olympiakos" went down in the club's history.

From 1975 to 1984 he was finally president of the club. He was voted out of office on August 1, 1984. Petros Kalafatis took over his presidency .

The successful seventies team

The Koudas era is characterized as the establishment and creation of prestige. Georgios Koudas signed a 5-year contract in 1958 at the age of 12. Finally, Koudas made his debut in the first team in 1963 at the age of just 17. Not only national titles and successful placements in the championship in the 1970s, but also participation in European competitions ensured that PAOK achieved national and international fame. The captain shaped the club and helped it achieve some successes. As a cup winner in 1972, PAOK was able to secure the Football Cup of Greater Greece the following year, which was played between the top teams and the cup winners from Greece and Cyprus. In the first and second leg you could win against Omonia Nicosia . The highlight of this era was in 1976 the first time he won the championship under Hungarian coach Gyula Lóránt .

Koudas as a pop culture phenomenon

Because of his leadership qualities as a captain, Koudas was also referred to as Alexander the Great (Μεγαλέξανδρο) by supporters of the club . Another common name was deer of the north (Greek: Ζαρκάδι του Βορρά).

On April 18, 1973, in a cup game against Panathinaikos, the "Koudas Photo" was created, which is often understood as symbolic of the captain's talent and style of play and is representative of the dominance of the team at the time. In the 34th minute of the game, the captain dribbled past Anthimons Kapsis in midfield, who clung to Koudas from behind to bring him down and prevent the counterattack. Koudas later said that the defender's fair play, who stopped him with his hands instead of a tackle, was an ode to fairness. He also praised the photographer Michaelis Papous and described the game as a game of surprises and a deserved victory. Defense attorney Anthimos Kapsis said he had respect for Koudas and did not want to hurt him. He then helped Koudas on his feet again to the applause of the audience. The photo was often featured on front pages and posters in its day. Another example of Koudas' presence in Greek pop culture at that time is the song by the composer and songwriter Manolis Rasoulis , who appeared in one of his stanzas in a song entitled "Πότε Βούδας, πότε Κούδας" (German: Pote Woudas, pote Koudas) says: "Sometimes Buddha, sometimes Koudas, sometimes Jesus and Judas" . The singer-songwriter lived near Toumba Stadium and attended the PAOK games.

Georgios Koudas ended his active career in 1984. He was with the club for over 25 years and shaped two generations of footballers.

Troubled Times and the Batatoudis Plan (1986-2003)

Inconsistent Times (1986-1996)

The time between the last championship in 1985 and Georgios Batatoudis' entry as President of PAOK in 1996 was inconsistent and changeable. It was possible to qualify for the European competition a few times, but there were often problems in the management level and violence from your own fans in the stadium. Thomas Voulinos took over the management of the club in April 1989 and succeeded Ioannis Dedeoglou in the presidency . He used the Dutchman Rob Jakobs as the new coach and strengthened the squad with Georgios Mitsibonas and the Egyptian Tolba Magdy , who was also the first African player in the history of the club. The riots around Thomas Voulinos spread to the field and the fans and successes stayed away. An example is the game against Paris Saint-Germain in 1992/93 , in which the violence of the fans caused the game to be abandoned.

The Batatoudi era (1996-2003)

In 1996 , the entrepreneur from Evros , Georgios Batatoudis, who was later lovingly called Batman by the fans , took over the club and tried to stabilize it, which he succeeded primarily through player transfers and team leadership. He signed players like Percy Olivares , Zisis Vryzas , Spiros Marangos and Konstantinos Frantzeskos . Batatoudis had his first successes soon afterwards. In the first round of the UEFA Cup in 1997/98 could Arsenal eliminated. Later on, coaches such as Arie Haan and Oleh Blochin had experience that the players made use of. In the transfer period of the summer of 1999, Batatoudis took Nikos Frousos and Ionikos Nikea without consulting the management team around coach Arie Haan . At the same time, the then owner of the club, Stylianos Venetidis , signed a contract with Xanthi FC for 230 million Greek drachmas, which he then sold to Olympiacos for a profit a few years later. With the commitments of Omari Tetradze , the Australian Ante Covic and Georgios Georgiadis from Newcastle United , in whose commitment Arie Haan played an important role, Batatoudis completed his plan of qualitative expansion and set the course for later national success.

In the 2000/01 season he won the Greek Cup . They beat arch rivals Olympiacos 4-2 in Athens and were able to achieve a significant success for the first time in more than 15 years. Despite winning the cup again in the 2002/03 season, the president was forced to sell the shares in the club, and handed them over to Ioannis Goumenos as president .

About Goumenos to the Zagorakis Years (2003–2012)

The transition years (2003-2007)

Goumenos has already taken over a debt of 11 million euros, which he tripled to over 30 million euros in the years of his work. His financial means to maintain the club were insufficient. The search for a financially strong investor was unsuccessful. Only the return of the hopeful Theodoros Zagorakis as a player led the club to stable conditions after a long period of stagnation.

Stabilization under Zagorakis (2007-2012)

In 2007, Theodoros Zagorakis took over the presidency of the club as a “helper in need” and drafted a plan for debt reduction and further sporting development. In his first position, Zagorakis announced: "I want to serve the club from a different position than before, but continue to serve the club with the utmost dedication."

The aim was to get the club out of debt and establish it in the European places. He called this plan "The Three-Year Plan" and at the same time appealed to the fans of PAOK to support the club. In the first year of his presidency he signed Fernando Santos , whom he already knew from his time at league rivals AEK Athens . In the summer transfer period of 2008, Zagorakis prepared the planning of the squad in such a way that experienced professionals who could help the club in terms of sport were hired. With players like Pablo Garcia , Zlatan Muslimovic , Sérgio Conceição and Pablo Contreras , PAOK was able to achieve 2nd place in the Super League in the 2008/09 season . In the following season, other players such as Vitolo and Bruno Cirillo were signed to fill the squad more deeply. The financial situation slowly began to improve thanks to sponsorships, participation in European competitions and player sales.

Ivan Savvidi's era (since 2012)

The Russian-Greek entrepreneur Ivan Savvidis has been the owner of the club since 2012
Consolidation and upswing (2012 to 2016)

The Greek-Russian entrepreneur Ivan Savvidis took over the majority of the shares in the summer of 2012 after lengthy negotiations. He invested 10 million euros directly and also granted the association a loan of 2 million euros. Under his leadership, the game and stadium conditions were improved and structural changes were made. The club's emblem has been revised and adapted to the digital age. The team bus has also been modernized. In the Toumba Stadium , the VIP area was provided with boxes and both the entire dressing area and the aging interior of the stadium were modernized and upgraded. In 2015, Savvidis and the club benefited from a government law that waived the interest charges on old debts. Savvidis was able to repay the initial 11 million euros in liabilities directly and thus make the club debt-free. This gave the club more freedom for the squad planning of the team and in the 2015/16 season transfers amounting to around 7 million euros could be made.

The fight for titles and championships (since 2017)

In the following two seasons, the quality and breadth of the squad was strengthened, so that with the victory in the Greek cup competition 2016/17, the first success under Savvidis could be achieved. After the departure of Vladimir Ivić , the sports director Ľuboš Micheľ signed the Serbian Aleksandar Stanojevic as a new coach in June 2017. After only 57 days, however, Stanojevic was on leave and replaced by the Romanian Răzvan Lucescu , who had already been traded as a possible candidate before Stanojevic was committed to the club. In March 2018, Savvidis caused a sensation when, in the 89th minute of the game against AEK Athens, he ran onto the pitch with a pistol on his belt after his team failed to score an offside goal, threatening the referee and causing the game to be abandoned. For this he was sentenced to a fine and a three-year stadium ban. PAOK was penalized with point deductions: three points in the current championship, two points in the coming 2018/19 season. At the end of the 2017/18 season, PAOK was in second place in the league and won the Greek Cup for the second time in a row. In the Olympic Stadium in Athens , the club won the final against AEK Athens 2-0 and was able to finish the season successfully despite the missed championship. The squad was further improved in the 2018/19 season. You could secure the services of the Swedish national player Pontus Wernbloom and made the most expensive purchase in the history of the club to date with the signing of the Icelandic Sverrir Ingi Ingason during the winter break . Furthermore, the experienced team around captain Vieirinha was strengthened by the loan of the Portuguese Sergio Oliveira and the integration of talents such as Chuba Akpom , Karol Swiderski and Leo Jaba with a view to the current championship.

Abel Fernando Moreira Ferreira
Abel Ferreira has been the club's coach since 2019

This resulted in the first championship in 34 years. One matchday before the end of regular time, PAOK secured the championship with a 5-0 win against Levadiakos . The subsequent championship celebration in the stadium was carried out with a pyro and light show, and a motorcade continued peacefully through the city. Since you had to start with 2 points deduction at the beginning of the season and became unbeaten champions, it will go down as the best team performance of a club in the history of the Super League to date . PAOK has the record from 1964, when Panathinaikos Athens undefeated champions was not only set, but surpassed, as they could show 26 wins and 4 draws in the overall result, with the previous record holder Panathinaikos, 24 wins and in the 1963/64 season 6 draws. The cup final was played again and for the third time in a row against AEK Athens. A goal from Chuba Akpom celebrated the third cup win in a row and thus secured the first double in the club's history. This makes the team for the 2018/19 season the most successful in club history.

On June 30, 2019 and two days after the departure of the master coach Razvan Lucescu, the Portuguese Abel Ferreira signed a three-year contract with the club.

The second leg went down in the history books when they also reached 0-0 in the Munich Olympic Stadium on November 2, 1983 and only had to admit defeat 9-8 after a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

In the 1988/89 season they lost Diego Armando Maradona with his SSC Napoli in the first leg in Napoli just 1-0. The second leg took place on September 21, 1988 and ended in a 1-1 draw, which could be seen as a success.

In the 1991/92 season PAOK then played against the Belgian team KV Mechelen , which he beat in the first round and thus moved into the second round of the UEFA Cup. There they were eliminated against Tirol Innsbruck .

A black hour in club history followed in 1992/93 against Paris St. Germain , where the first leg against George Weah , David Ginola and Co had to be played by ten from the 63rd minute and lost 2-0. In the second leg, the game had to be abandoned due to serious riots. PAOK received a UEFA penalty and the club was banned from competing for two years. The game was rated 0: 3 for Paris. The next participation could only take place in the 1997/98 season .

This experienced the last UEFA Cup season, as the competition was reformed to the Europa League in the following year. Zagorakis reached the group stage with his team in the 2005/06 season , but finished fourth in the group and said goodbye to the UEFA Cup competition, which has given him a lot of recognition and great moments in club history over the years.

UEFA Europa League

PAOK's first participation in the UEFA Europa League was in 2009/2010 , in which they had to admit defeat to SC Heerenveen in the play-off round .

PAOK in the Europa League against CSKA Moscow in the round of the best 32 teams

After failing to qualify for the Champions League in the 2010/11 season , they won the Europa League play-offs against Fenerbahçe Istanbul , and PAOK moved into the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. There, behind FC Villarreal and ahead of Dinamo Zagreb and Club Brugge, the second place in the table was achieved. Against CSKA Moscow it was over in the second round.

In 2011/12 the team started after fourth place in the championship and second place in the Super League play-offs in the Europa League qualifying round, where PAOK won against Vålerenga Oslo (qualifying round 3) and Karpaty Lemberg (play-offs) and the ensured renewed participation. In the 2013/14 season they qualified directly for the group stage and did not have to go through the third qualifying round. PAOK again reached the round of the 32 best teams, where they had to admit defeat Benfica Lisbon .

In the following season they did not get beyond the group stage and were eliminated early. In 2015/16 they went through the second and third qualifying rounds before being drawn in the group for FK Qəbələ , Krasnodar and Borussia Dortmund . They did not reach the next round, but were able to achieve a respectable success against Dortmund by achieving a 0-1 away win at the Westfalenstadion .

In the 2016/17 season and after leaving the Champions League qualification, they reached the group stage of the Europa League after beating Dynamo Tbilisi . You could qualify for the next round in second behind Fiorentina . A year later, in 2017/18 , they met Olympik Donetsk in the first qualifying round , which they could defeat in two games. In the next qualifying round and after moving into the Europa League group stage, they met Östersund FK . The first leg was won 3-1 at home. A big disappointment ensues in the second leg in Sweden. The team was unexpectedly eliminated with a 2-0 win by the home team.

After the elimination in the play-offs of the Champions League 2018/19 against Benfica Lisbon, the club was drawn into Group L of the Europa League 2018/19, and thus got Chelsea , Bate Borisov and Vidi FC as opponents.

UEFA Champions League / European Cup

European Champions Cup

PAOK qualified for this competition for the first time after winning the championship in 1976. In the 1976/77 event , they met the Cypriot representative Omonia Nicosia . The away game was won 2-0. The first goal for the club in the competition was scored by Georgios Koudas in the 34th minute of the game. The second leg at Toumba Stadium under coach Branko Stanković ended 1-1. PAOK thus moved into the second round of the tournament. There they met the Soviet representative Dynamo Kiev , who defeated PAOK 4-0 in front of a home crowd. Kiev also won the game in Thessaloniki, so that PAOK was eliminated.

The second and last participation in this competition took place in the 1985/86 season . Here they met the Italian club Hellas Verona , which won the first game 3-1. PAOK also lost the second leg against the favored Italian representative and were eliminated.

UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds

In the 2004/05 season you had to accept against Maccabi Tel Aviv to qualify for the Champions League, because of a formal error when substituting a player who was not eligible to play with a 3-0 valuation of the game for the opponent, and thus missed the qualification.

In 2010/11 , the team reached the qualification for the UEFA Champions League as a championship third (and play-off winner) , in which they narrowly failed to Ajax Amsterdam in the third qualifying round. You played in the two legs, so that only the away goals for Ajax Amsterdam decided the qualification.

PAOK's team against Spartak Moscow in the Otkrytije Arena in August 2018

PAOK became Greek runners-up in the 2012/13 season and qualified for the third round of the Champions League qualifying games for the 2013/14 season . There, PAOK met Ukrainian runners-up Metalist Kharkiv , against whom UEFA had launched an investigation into a 2008 manipulation scandal. Saloniki dropped out of the competition after a 2-0 and 1-1 draw. A few days later, however, UEFA excluded Metalist from all European competitions due to the manipulation, which allowed Saloniki to advance to the Champions League playoff round. They met FC Schalke 04 . PAOK was able to achieve a 1-1 draw in the first leg. The second leg, however, they lost 3-2 at home with a goal in stoppage time from Ádám Szalai .

In the 2016/17 season they qualified for the Champions League and played against Ajax Amsterdam as in the 2010/11 season. Again, they fail to prevail and Ajax was able to qualify for the group stage.

In the 2018/19 season you should meet FC Basel . The first leg was decided 2-1 in the Toumba Stadium and the result went to St. Jakob-Park in Basel. There they secured qualification for the third round with a 3-0 win. The qualification for the play-offs for participation in the Champions League should be fought out with Spartak Moscow . PAOK won the first leg 3-2, the second leg at the Otkrytije Arena in Moscow ended 0-0, which meant they qualified for the play-offs. In the play-offs and thus the final qualifying round, they were drawn against Benfica Lisbon. The first game took place at the Estádio da Luz . A draw in Lisbon was followed by a home defeat, so that the club again missed a place in the top European league, and ended up in the Europa League pot for the 2018/19 season.

In the 2019/20 season , the club is again defeated by Ajax Amsterdam in two games and cannot move into the group stage of the Champions League.

The Syntrivani Stadium (1929-1959)

PAOK at Syntrivani Stadium, the first home arena

The club's first venue was the Syntrivani Stadium (Γήπεδο Συντριβανίου), which it initially shared with AEK Thessaloniki. The station was at the current location of the theological faculty of Aristotle University . The foundation stone was laid on December 12, 1929, although the field was already inaugurated by the athletics department of AEK Thessaloniki in 1928. The first game in the completed stadium was played by PAOK against Iraklis Thessaloniki on June 5, 1932, PAOK won 3-2. On July 17, 1952, floodlights were used for the first time in a game against Panionios Athens . The last official game was played by PAOK on May 31, 1959 and then moved to the newly built Toumba Stadium . Until the 1960s, friendly matches and training sessions were held in the Syntrivani Stadium.

Toumba Stadium (1959 - today)

The main stand of the Toumba Stadium

PAOK has played its home games here since the stadium opened on September 6, 1959 with a friendly against AEK Athens .

The back straight of the Toumba Stadium

The stadium's capacity was 45,000 standing places until 1998. Then seats were installed, which reduced the capacity to 32,000 seats. The introduction of security zones in 2000 reduced the capacity to the current number of 28,701 places.

The stadium was renovated for the 2004 Summer Olympics and was intended as a training ground.

On December 19, 1976, a record of 45,252 viewers who saw the match PAOK against AEK Athens was achieved to this day.

Nea Toumba

At the time of the takeover, the owner of the club, Ivan Savvidis , thought of a modern arena that would be better adapted to the modern needs of football. The first plans were commissioned in 2016, and a so-called "task force" was set up to deal with the construction of the new arena. After no land could be found for the new building on the outskirts, it was decided instead to replace the old Toumba Stadium with a new building at the same location. The parliament as well as local politicians like the then mayor Giannis Boutaris and the prefecture expressed their interest and support. The surrounding area originally belonged to the Greek military, but was loaned to PAOK by then Defense Minister Panos Kammenos for 100 years for a symbolic amount of EUR 1. In the summer and autumn of 2019, further applications and planning discussions were held with the city councils and the prefecture , as well as discussions with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the responsible minister, Elefterios Avgenakis, in order to begin with the demolition of the old Toumba stadium in 2020 if possible.

Currently, a capacity of 41,926 spaces, a number that should symbolically encompass the year of foundation, better transport connections and more parking spaces are planned. Shops, restaurants, boxes and the club museum are also to be integrated into the new stadium. During the construction phase, which is scheduled for three years, the club will host its home games in the neighboring Kaftantzoglio Stadium .

The training center (since 2011)

The PAOK Sport Center is located in Nea Mesimvria in the municipality of Chalkidona . The project was started during the presidency of Theodoros Zagorakis , the first training was completed by the professional team after a completion time of four years on September 1, 2011. Until 2016, the site was gradually expanded.

The training center offers the opportunity to train on an area of 70,000 square meters on six areas illuminated with floodlight masts. The facility also includes rooms for physiotherapy , cryotherapy , strength training as well as offices for the trainer team and a bar.

Friendships and rivalries

Friendships

PAOK / Partizan Brothers fan friendship shirt

Partizan Belgrade

There is a close fan friendship with Partizan Belgrade , a motto / quote from the Partizan fans is: Partizan Beograd & PAOK Saloniki iste boje - ista vera (German: Partizan Belgrad & PAOK Saloniki same colors - same belief / same religion)

With the same belief, or the same religion, reference is made to the Christian Orthodox belief widespread among most Greeks and Serbs . PAOK fans, especially from the ultra group GATE 4, can often be seen in Belgrade , and conversely, Partizan fans, especially their Ultras , called Grobari (German: "The Grave Diggers "), are guests in Thessaloniki. These lively visits particularly apply to basketball games from PAOK Thessaloniki .

Juventus Turin

Another club with which they have close ties is Juventus Turin , with whom there has been an official cooperation in the field of youth academies since 2013. The derivation and justification lies simply in the club colors of the two clubs, which are black and white. In the 1980s, PAOK fans began to wear Juventus jerseys, so that it went so far that the Juventus fans picked it up and also expressed their support for PAOK.

CSKA Moscow

The youngest of the fan friendships is the friendship with the Russian club CSKA Moscow , which manifested itself in the 2010/11 season , where they played against each other in the Europa League play-off.

OFI Crete

The only professional Greek club with which PAOK fans are friendly is the OFI Crete club . Not only do they have common club colors, but they also agree on their antipathy towards the clubs from Attica . A well-known example of the friendship between the two groups of supporters is the late composer and songwriter Manolis Rasoulis , who was born in Crete and who explained in an interview for the club magazine PAOK Embisteftiko that he always came first with OFI and then PAOK. He was born near the OFI Stadium and he would live near the Tumba Stadium, which gives him the opportunity to watch the PAOK games in the stadium.

Apollon Pontou

The club of many Pontic Greeks , which is also based in Thessaloniki, plays in the Kalamaria district and regularly shows friendship with PAOK. On the one hand, both clubs have the same founding date and on the other hand they both have a similar founding history, which connects the two clubs. Apollon Pontou was founded in 1926 by refugees from the Pontos on the Black Sea and, as a result, has been renamed from Apollon Kalamarias to Apollon Pontou. Since then, the connection between the followers has grown closer. For the cup game in October 2017, Apollon initiated a joint fan curve based on this fraternity.

Rivalries

The city rivals

A traditional rivalry is the one against city rivals Aris Thessaloniki , which goes back decades and is deeply rooted among the fans of both clubs. There is also hostility towards the traditional club Iraklis Thessaloniki , which often leads to a high level of fanatical outbursts. Unlike the rivalry with Aris, these take place on a purely sporting level, and only reach the supporters of both clubs. The owner of PAOK, Ivan Savvidis, spoke out in favor of financial support for the traditional club when it was in a threatening financial situation in mid-2017.

The clubs from Attica

The rivalry with Olympiacos Piraeus is one with wider implications, as it is often politically motivated. The main criticism of the majority of PAOK fan groups is the centralized government, which is often supposed to give preferential treatment to the big clubs from Athens or Piraeus . The club was very often punished for the misconduct of the fans in the home games, mostly by deducting points or fines.

There is also an aversion to Panathinaikos Athens , even if this is not as pronounced as the one against the club from Piraeus. Nevertheless, in the play-offs of the Super League, qualification for the qualifying round of the Champions League in May 2017, with a heated atmosphere to throw a beer can, which Vladan Ivic, the PAOK coach, hit in the head. The game was then abandoned and the coach was taken to the hospital.

International rivalry

Huub Stevens competed as coach of PAOK against his former club Schalke 04 in the 2012 Champions League qualifying round.

FC Schalke 04

Another rivalry exists against FC Schalke 04 . The ultras of the German team cultivate a friendship with Vardar Skopje , who provoked the fans of PAOK politically, culturally and historically in the first meeting of the two clubs on August 21, 2013 at Schalke with the flag of the Star of Vergina , so that PAOK supporters threatened to storm the north curve.

As part of this Champions League qualifier, a hundred of the police had to remove the flag from the block on the north curve by cracking down on the Schalke supporters and some Ultras from Skopje in order to finally be able to remove the flag from the block . This mission led to months of controversy between the North Rhine-Westphalian police , the then Interior Minister Ralf Jäger , and Schalke 04.

The two clubs were drawn together again in the Europa League in 2016/17. The first leg took place on February 16, 2017, when the Gelsenkirchen team had to go to Thessaloniki. There Schalke Ultras caused serious riots before the game, so that the police had to use tear gas on a massive scale. At least one Schalke supporter had to be taken into custody.

At the return match on February 22nd, 2017, which was classified by the police of North Rhine-Westphalia in advance as a " high risk game ", the Gelsenkirchen Ultras and the supporters of Skopje were again provoked with the symbol of the star of Vergina . This symbol is used by the nationalists of North Macedonia as a symbol of their own expansionist wishes. Since both the police and the PAOK fans were better prepared this time, they let this repeated provocation ricochet off and remained calm.

Youth promotion

PAOK Academy program

Through the “PAOK Academy” program, which the club has been running for many years both nationally and internationally, the club cooperates with clubs that could be potential suppliers of talented and young footballers. The club's scouting department is looking for clubs with a good infrastructure in the field of youth work.

Federal Republic of Germany

A noteworthy international project is the cooperation with the Essen district league club FC Saloniki Essen e. V., which is based in the north of Essen, and was founded by Greek immigrants in the 1960s. Over the decades, such structures could be created that the youth departments could be expanded. The thoroughly professional design of the training and playgrounds in the local stadium of the Bäuminghausstrasse district sports facility and the conditions for children and young people were rated as good by PAOK in order to encourage cooperation.

The FC Pontus from Munich is also a project of the PAOK Academy, which trains children from the F-Youth to the D-Youth in football in the training center, and is supported by the program with financial means.

The chairmen & presidents of the club

The officials Petros Kalafatis, Theodoros Zagorakis and Zisis Vryzas are the three responsible persons, who each had two terms as presidents. Nikolaos Vezyrtzis was also a successful president of PAOK's basketball division in the 1980s, prior to his presidency in football. Ioannis Dedeoglou, together with his brother, is one of the founders of the land on which the PAOK Sports Arena for the basketball and volleyball department of the club could be built. Georgios Pantelakis was already active in various positions from 1960-1971 and 1975-1984 for the club. In doing so, he was already doing similar tasks to the president and was also in charge of the club's fortunes as sports director.
