Career

society

Pablo Contreras began his professional career in 1996 with his youth club CSD Colo-Colo from Chile . However, he did not make his debut in the Primera División until 1997. After his first year as a professional, the defender was able to win the Chilean championship with his club . The title was defended the following year. After he was able to convince there for 3 years and received attention from European teams, Contreras signed in 1999 with the French first division club AS Monaco . As a young player, he was quickly accepted into the team and had a share in the Ligue 1 win . The following summer he won the game for the Trophée des Champions , the Super Cup. While in Monaco, Contreras made his first appearances in the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League .

In January 2001 the defensive player was accused of using a forged Italian passport to gain EU citizenship. He was then convicted by a Paris court, had to pay a fine of € 30,000 and was banned from Ligue 1 for two years . For this reason, the AS officials loaned him to the Argentine club Racing Club Avellaneda during the winter break . After his return, the club looked for a new club for Contreras and found it in the Spanish first division club Celta Vigo . Even before he ran for his new club, the defender was loaned to league rivals CA Osasuna , where he came to regular use. In the following season, a loan deal followed the Portuguese top club Sporting Lisbon .

After his return to Celta Vigo, Contreras finally managed to convince coach Miguel Ángel Lotina . For the next four and a half years, the right-back was a regular at the Spanish club. Although Contreras still played in the Champions League with Celta in 2003/04, relegation to the Segunda División followed . However, the club reached a second place there and was able to celebrate the rise in 2005. After the start of the 2007/08 season was not optimal for the Chilean, both sides decided to terminate the contract during the winter break. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Portugal for the second time, where he joined Sporting Braga . After only six months he moved to the Greek club PAOK Thessaloniki . The team was immediately runner-up in Greece with Contreras. A year later it was enough to rank third. The defensive player was a top performer and an important support in the defensive network of the Mediterranean football team in both years. In January 2012 he moved back to his youth club Colo Colo in the Chilean Primera Division, where he only stayed briefly. Olympiacos was looking for a new defender and signed Contreras in August 2012.

In September 2013 Contreras signed a contract as a marquee with the Australian professional club Melbourne Victory .

National team

Pablo Contreras can look back on an eventful national team career. He made his debut for the South Americans on February 17, 1999 in the game against Guatemala . Although his team could not qualify for the two World Cup finals in Japan / South Korea in 2002 and Germany in 2006, he took part in the Copa America in 1999 and 2007 for Chile. After the quarter-finals in 2007, Contreras and five other players rioted in the hotel and were banned from the Chilean federation for 20 games after the tournament.

After ten games of penance and a public apology, Contreras and the rest of the participants were taken back to the national team.

His greatest international success to date was the bronze medal in 2000 at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney . In the small final, the success was achieved over the USA. He was then voted the tournament's best defender.

Between October 2007 and October 2009 they qualified for the finals of the 2010 Soccer World Cup . Then, the defensive player was established in May 2010 by coach Marcelo Bielsa in the squad called the Chileans for the World Cup in South Africa. This makes him the oldest player in the Andean football team. With Chile he reached the World Cup round of 16, in which Brazil lost 3-0.
