qualification
The team qualified for the World Cup in South Africa through the qualifying games of the South American football association CONMEBOL .
All ten teams that belonged to the South American association CONMEBOL played against each other in a single group stage with a home and away leg, with a total of 18 matches. The four best-placed teams qualified directly for the finals of the 2010 World Cup, with the fifth-placed team competing against the fourth-placed team from the CONCACAF qualification for a final place. Chile rose to the finals as runners-up.

Chilean contingent
National coach Marcelo Bielsa originally nominated 30 players in the provisional line-up, but on May 18, he dropped Manuel Iturra (Universidad de Chile), Pedro Morales (Dinamo Zagreb), Jaime Valdés (Atalanta Bergamo), Charles Aránguiz and José Pedro Fuenzalida (both Colo-Colo) five midfielders from the squad. On May 25, another player, Héctor Mancilla (Deportivo Toluca), was eliminated, and on June 1, Roberto Cereceda (Colo-Colo) was the last player to miss the leap into the final squad.

In the preliminary round of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the Chilean national team met in Group H against Spain , Switzerland and Honduras . After narrow victories in the first two games, Chile had the best conditions to move into the final round. In the end, despite a defeat in the final game against group favorites Spain, they came in second in the table because Switzerland did not get past Honduras 0-0 at the same time.
