Career
society
González came to Chile at the age of ten and initially played in several Chilean youth teams and also briefly in his native South Africa and in Germany . González's first major club was CD Universidad Católica , from which he was brought into the first team in 2002.
After two successful years, he went to Spain to Albacete Balompié . With the Spanish first division club, he was relegated to the second Spanish division in his first season .
In 2005 he signed a contract with Liverpool FC , but was initially not eligible to play for this club due to a lack of a work permit. For this reason, he first played on loan for Real Sociedad in the 2005/06 season . In the 2006/07 season González could play for the first time for Liverpool. With the English, however, he could not fight for a regular place. González was used in 25 league games, of which he played just two over the entire season. What he has left from his time at Liverpool is his only title with a club team so far, the FA Community Shield .
He had no choice but to look for his luck at another club and so he moved to Betis Sevilla in the summer of 2007. He was regularly used at Betis during his two-year stay and scored ten goals in 44 games. When Betis relegated to the Segunda División at the end of the 2008/09 season, he said he wanted to leave the club.
On August 11, 2009, CSKA Moscow announced the signing of Mark González for a transfer fee of around 6.5 million euros. With the Russian club he reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in the 2009/10 season .
National team
He played his first game for the Chilean national team on June 8, 2003 against Costa Rica . González has played 46 times for the Chilean national soccer team and scored four goals. After he played 13 of 18 possible games in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he was appointed to the squad of the Chilean selection for the finals of this tournament . There he made four appearances before the team was eliminated in the round of 16 against Brazil . González scored the only goal of the day in the 1-0 win against Switzerland in the preliminary round . With that he led his team to the second group victory. It remained his only goal in the competition.
