Soccer World Cup 2010 / Portugal
This article covers the Portuguese national soccer team at the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa .
qualification
The Portuguese started successfully in the World Cup qualification with a clear victory in Malta. In their first home game against Denmark , the Portuguese led for a long time and only had to accept an equalizer from Nicklas Bendtner in the 83rd minute , but Deco managed to renew the lead for Portugal just three minutes later. The guests from Denmark turned things around in the last five minutes when Christian Poulsen scored the equalizer and Daniel Jensen even secured the Danes' victory in stoppage time.
This setback was followed by other results that made participation in the 2010 World Cup a long way off, when the Portuguese national team drew 0-0 three times in a row. It was only in the sixth game of qualification that Hugo Almeida was able to break the spell in Tirana when he brought the guests into the lead. After Erjon Bogdani was able to equalize for Albania shortly afterwards , Bruno Alves only scored the winning goal in stoppage time. In the next four games, the Portuguese were able to improve when they drew in Denmark, beat Hungary twice and defeated Malta at the end of the qualification .
After ten games in the group, Portugal finished second and fought in two play-off games against Bosnia and Herzegovina for participation in the World Cup. The Portuguese won both the first and second leg 1-0 and thus qualified for the 2010 World Cup . Portugal's top scorer during qualifying was Simão , who scored four goals. Portugal started the 2010 World Cup in a group with Ivory Coast , North Korea and Brazil .
