Hugo Miguel Pereira de Almeida , called Hugo Almeida (born May 23, 1984 in Figueira da Foz , Portugal ) is a former Portuguese football player .

Career

societies

Hugo Almeida began his career in the youth of Naval 1º de Maio . After a season for the first team in the second division , he moved to the first division club FC Porto in 2003 , where he was never really able to assert himself and was awarded to União Leiria and Boavista Porto . For the 2006/07 season , Almeida initially moved to Werder Bremen on loan for one season . The rental fee was around one million euros . In addition, a purchase option (approx. 3.5 million euros) was agreed, which Werder Bremen finally withdrew on May 21, 2007 and signed the Portuguese international striker until 2011.

Werder he secured under his patron Thomas Schaaf in 2006/07 by goals against Ajax and Celta Vigo the entry to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup . In 2009, too, he played a major role in both the UEFA Cup finals (goal against Udinese Calcio ) and the DFB Cup victory (goals against SV Eintracht Nordhorn and Borussia Dortmund ). Almeida's great strength is the power of shooting with a strong left foot. In the 2008/09 season he scored a goal with 124 km / h on matchday 13 against 1. FC Köln from 22 meters  . Furthermore, despite his stature, he is quite fast and therefore very assertive, which means that he can also show a good header game. One of his big weaknesses, however, is the exploitation of chances, because precisely because he has such a strong shot, he tries to hit this way from a short distance to the goal, but he often fails.

During the winter break of the 2010/11 season , he moved to Turkish first division side Beşiktaş Istanbul for two million euros and won the Turkish Cup with his new club in his first season. He made his first appearance in the Süper Lig on January 21, 2011 (18th matchday) in a 5-1 win over Bucaspor . Five days later he scored his first goal for Beşiktaş in a 2-1 win in the cup match against Trabzonspor . In the 5-1 win on September 15, 2011 in the UEFA Europa League game against Maccabi Tel Aviv , Almeida distinguished himself as a two-time goalscorer.

After he was out of a club at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Hugo Almeida signed a contract with the Italian first division promoted AC Cesena in October 2014 , which, however, was dissolved again in January 2015. Almeida then moved to the Russian first division club Kuban Krasnodar . In July 2015, Almeida joined the newcomer Anzhi Makhachkala . After twelve league games in which he scored two goals, the contract was terminated on January 13, 2016. On January 16, 2016, he returned to Germany and joined the relegation candidate Hannover 96 . There he met Thomas Schaaf again, whom he described as his maker: “I need him. If I hadn't wanted to work with him, I wouldn't have come. Sometimes I say that Thomas created me. ”After Schaaf was dismissed, he was demoted by the new coach Daniel Stendel and was initially no longer considered. Hannover 96 relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the 2015/16 season.

From July 2016 to June 2017 Almeida was under contract with AEK Athens .

From the summer of 2017 he played for the Croatian first division club HNK Hajduk Split. He scored 3 goals in 20 games. He then let his career end with the Portuguese second division club Académica de Coimbra . At the beginning of February 2020, he announced the end of his career.

He was not yet in the Portuguese squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but two years later he was nominated by Luiz Felipe Scolari for the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland and also played at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , where he was in his first World Cup Game, the 2nd group match against North Korea , scored his first World Cup goal .
