Hasan Şengün (born July 14, 1961 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Trabzonspor and Samsunspor , he is strongly associated with these clubs. In Turkish football he is best known by his nickname Dobi Hasan (dt. Ball Hasan ).

Childhood and youth

Şengün was born in Trabzon and lived with his family in the district town of Sürmene . Since Şengün's family lived in socially disadvantaged living conditions and his father could not find a job, the family moved to Samsun . At that time, Şengün was only 4-5 years old. Little Şengün played street soccer with his peers on the surrounding football fields in his new residential area . Since it was difficult to get soccer balls at the time, the children borrowed balls from other acquaintances to play with. At that time an elderly gentleman named Mustafa lived in Şengüns Kiez who liked Şengün and owned a soccer ball. Knowing this fact, Şengün's friend suggested to him to ask Mustafa for the ball. Şengün then asked for the ball in embarrassment and said Dobi in an East-Black Sea dialect instead of Topu (ball) . He got the ball on loan and was henceforth addressed by the nickname Dobi Hasan . He kept this nickname throughout his career.

After Şengün's soccer talent got around, he started playing club soccer in the youth of Samsun Yolspor . Through his work at this club, the city's largest club, Samsunspor , became interested in Şengün and engaged him. Since a direct change within a city was not allowed at the time, Şengün changed to Trabzon Yolspor for half a season and after this half season to the youth of Samsunspor. At the age of 18 he received a professional contract with the then second division team Samsunspor and was also involved in the professional squad. Here he established himself as a regular player within the next two years. The breakthrough came Şengün in the second division season 1981/82 . Here he formed together with Murat Şimşek , Metin Karabulut and eighteen-year-old Tanju Çolak , who would later become one of the best strikers in Turkish football, the storm of the team. Due to his performance, he was also noticed by those responsible for the Turkish U-21 national team , who then nominated him for a test match. This international match ensured that Şengün's popularity grew even more in the Turkish football scene. At the end of the 1981/82 season, Şengün reached the championship of the 2nd Futbol Ligi and thus promotion to the 1st Lig with his team . After the promotion, the club missed relegation in its first first division season and was relegated back to the second division.

After relegation with Samsunspor, several first division clubs tried to get Şengüns committed. Since his family originally came from the Trabzon province and therefore were supporters of Trabzonspor , the president of the Trabzonspor association, Mehmet Ali Yılmaz , got in touch with Şengün's father and secured the promise of a change. Trabzonspor was promoted to the first league in the first half of the 1970s and became the first Anatolian team to become Turkish champions. After this championship, the club dominated Turkish football for about a decade. After Trabzonspor was able to win the Turkish championship five times in six years from 1976, the club missed the championship twice in a row from the summer of 1981. For this reason, the club invested in new players in the summer of 1983 and, in addition to Şengün, brought in Hasan Vezir another young and aspiring striker's hope. Şengün proved himself right away and became one of the most successful strikers in the league over the season. In the 1983/84 season Trabzonspor delivered a head-to-head race for the Turkish championship with Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul . Before the 26th matchday, Trabzonspor took first place in the table with just one point ahead of the two opponents. Already in the Saturday game of that match day, Galatasaray lost 3-0 to Orduspor and enabled Trabzonspor to make a preliminary decision towards the championship with an away win against the other direct rivals Fenerbahçe. In the hard-fought game, which was sold out with 26,000 spectators, both teams played a thrilling game. Şengün scored the winning goal with a header in the 89th minute to make it 1-0. This hit made him a match winner and ensured that his club took an important step towards the championship. The remaining game days, the team confidently kept the point advantage and reached the sixth and for the time being the last championship in the club's history. Şengün was instrumental in this success with his 14 goals this season, making him the most successful goalscorer of his club and 3rd on the list of goalscorers. His team also won the Turkish Football Cup this season and was also a Turkish double winner. The following seasons remained Shengün with his team below expectations and could until the summer of 1990, except for the Prime Minister's Cup of the 1984/85 season, no title. Şengün managed to achieve more than 10 goals in the seasons up to the summer of 1990. In the two seasons 1988/89 and 1989/90 he was gradually pushed out of the regular formation by young players like Hamdi Aslan , Orhan Çıkırıkçı and Hami Mandıralı .

After Şengün had recently played a reservist role at Trabzonspor and the last season was without a goal, he moved to the second division Malatyaspor . At the beginning of the 1980s, this club had a patron elected as club president, so that the club was able to sign star players. At this club, Şengün played a little over a year without being able to build on his old form. In October 1992 he was hired by his old club, Samsunspor . Here he pulled in the league game on February 9, 1992 against his old club Trabzonspor in the 10th minute of the game with a ruptured Achilles tendon and fell out the rest of the season due to injury. His team missed relegation at the end of the season and was relegated to the 2nd league. Since this club was very well staffed with such young and aspiring offensive players as Ertuğrul Sağlam , Orhan Kaynak , Serkan Aykut , all of whom would later achieve great careers, the newly recovered Shengün could not get beyond the reserve role. He started the next season at Samsunspor, but was given up to league rivals Bafraspor in November 1993 . Here he played until the end of the season and then ended his active career at the age of 31.

National team

During his time at Samsunspor , Şengün was nominated for the Turkish U-21 national team and made his U-21 international debut against the U-21 national team of the USSR on May 2, 1965 .

After the rise with Samsunspor in the 1st Lig, Şengün also moved into the focus of the coaching staff of the Turkish national team . So he was in the context of a scheduled December 22nd 1982 test match against the Bulgarian national team by the then national coach Coşkun Özarı for the first time in the squad of the Turkish national team . In this game, Şengün was substituted on for Ali Kemal Denizci and made his international debut. From then on he was one of the regularly nominated players for three years.

He played his last international match on October 16, 1985 against the English national team . In total, he played 17 times for the Turkish national team and scored three goals.

Coaching career

Şengün started his coaching career in 1994 as a youth coach at his old club Samsunspor . He then looked after several clubs in the 3rd and 4th leagues as head coach. In summer 2006 he returned to Samsunspor and worked in various positions in the youth department until 2006. In the summer of 2006 he took over the position of head coach at this club. After disappointing results, he resigned after just two months.

Subsequently he was in charge of the clubs İlkadım Belediyespor , Adıyamanspor and Dikbıyık Belediyespor. In 2013 he worked again as a youth coach at Samsunspor.
