List of railway accidents in Switzerland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of railway accidents in Switzerland contains a chronological listing of accidents on Swiss railways in which the loss of human life was to be deplored, considerable damage was caused or which are worth mentioning for other reasons. If not specifically mentioned, these were trains of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) .

Number of railway traffic victims in Switzerland. Road users in accidents at level crossings are not taken into account.
Red: reasons for an increase in casualties
Green: factors for reducing the accident and casualty figures

Compared to road traffic, the railroad is considered to be very safe, but accidents cannot be ruled out here either. With the advent of all-steel passenger coaches since the 1920s, passengers are much better protected in collisions than in coaches with wooden superstructures. Train protection systems such as the Integra-Signum were introduced from 1933 to avoid collisions entirely.

Railway accidents can cause considerable damage. Despite the human tragedy, the accidents often revealed safety deficiencies that triggered decisive developments in train protection . The results of the accident investigations can be viewed - for events in 2002 and later - on the website of the Swiss Safety Investigation Board (SUST) .

The train, which was brought to a standstill shortly after the departure in Sainte-Croix by an automatically initiated rapid braking , started moving for an unexplained reason after a long period of standing. Because the driver couldn't brake the train, he saved himself by jumping. The driverless empty train crossed a return train waiting for more than half an hour at the Trois-Villes station and finally derailed after driving almost six kilometers in impassable terrain. Jointly responsible for the accident are a conceptual error in the compressed air brake of the Be 4/4 railcar and an unsuitable aptitude test by the driver.

Already in 2000 and 2001 there were two derailments just a few meters away. Basel, Basel-Stadt - ICE derailed on a double crossing switchCanton of Basel-StadtCanton of Basel-Stadt
On November 29, 2017, three ICE 75 Hamburg-Altona - Chur cars jumped off the rails at the entrance to Basel SBB station . Nobody was injured and operations were restricted for three days. As on March 22, 2017, the ICE of Deutsche Bahn derailed the ETR 610 in Lucerne on a steep double-crossing switch . The cause of the accident is presumed to be a chain of several factors. The SBB could not rule out the possibility that with this type of turnout the stick rail would be pushed slightly outwards by a multiple unit driving over it and that a wheel could hit the turnout tongue and climb up, whereby the process is facilitated by insufficient flange lubrication. For this reason, in 2018 they replaced the otherwise tried and tested Jüdel type turnout locks with latch locks in which a bolt grips the pole rail and clamps it together with the tongue. The replacement of the four double crossings in Lucerne and Basel was also planned by the end of 2019, with the track geometry being adapted.

Baden, Aargau - train boss jammed by the doorKanton AargauKanton Aargau
On August 4, 2019, a train conductor in Baden was trapped by a door shortly after midnight, dragged along and fatally injured. The reason for this was a defective anti-trap device from the 1970s on a standard car IV . The accident caused great concern among the staff and severe criticism from the SBB management by the unions and the media. The SBB was u. a. accused of only providing information under public pressure. Some of the staff lack the confidence that reports of grievances will be taken seriously by SBB. After the accident, SBB subjected to the doors of the Mark IV a special control and changed the handling process for trains with Mark IV with yet modernized door closing in that train attendants now for notifying the for departure train in train an SMS sent to the locomotive engineer. The standard trolleys IV are equipped with pneumatic pivoting sliding doors that close very quickly and with great force after the closing command without acoustic or visual warning. Even before the accident, the SBB decided to equip all IV standard coaches that will remain in use after 2022 with a modernized door lock and additional door leaf monitoring.
