history

The station was built in 1882 as part of the opening of the Gotthard tunnel immediately north of its north portal. It developed into a traffic junction when the Schöllenenbahn established a connection to Andermatt in 1917 . This winter sports resort was now connected to international rail traffic by changing over to Göschenen, which meant that international express trains stopped at times.

With the opening of the Gotthard road tunnel in 1982, car transport became obsolete; however, the systems are still there today.

With the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2016, the importance of the station decreased again. Today only RegioExpress trains stop here between Erstfeld and Bellinzona , Lugano or Milano Centrale . However, the MGB trains run unchanged.

investment

SBB train station

The system comprises three passenger tracks on the SBB side (a side and a central platform with the numbering 1 (side platform), 2 and 3). The RegioExpress trains have stopped at the side platform (platform 1) in both directions since the Gotthard base tunnel opened. The central platforms are only used for passing through and stopping the InterRegio trains on weekends. In addition, there are several freight tracks, some of which used to be used to load cars through the Gotthard tunnel, which was replaced by the Gotthard road tunnel in 1981 . The loading ramp and the access route, which has its own entrance to the tunnel, are still intact. The former buffet has been replaced by a take-away kiosk.

MGB train station

The MGB station also has three tracks, numbered 11, 12 and 13. Track 13 leads to the depot and, together with the sparsely used track 12, forms a central platform that can only be reached by crossing tracks. Most of the traffic is handled on platform 11, which is located at the rear of the SBB station building and thus offers a level transition to platform 1, and platform 13.

business

SBB

Since the gradual elimination of international long-distance traffic , the station has been served almost exclusively by Regioexpress trains. Today the SBB offer a Regioexpress every hour. With the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the through Interregio trains Basel SBB / Zurich HB- Locarno were discontinued and replaced by the said RegioExpress. On weekends, individual pairs of interregional trains run to Göschenen.

With the discontinuation of SBB regional traffic on the Gotthard Railway, this traffic was shifted to the road between Flüelen and Airolo in 1991 . Since 1998 the regional trains (today S2 of the Stadtbahn Zug ) have been running back to Erstfeld and since the end of 2016 again over the entire mountain route (RegioExpress Erstfeld – Bellinzona).

MGB

  • Regio Göschenen – Andermatt (every hour)
  • RegioGöschenen – Andermatt– Realp - Brig - Visp (every hour)

The Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn offers two trains per hour to Andermatt, which run every hour - but to each other at an irregular 12/48 cycle. One connection offers a connection to the Regioexpress from Erstfeld and Bellinzona as well as the bus to Flüelen, the other serves the opposite direction Bellinzona-Erstfeld as well as the bus from Flüelen and after a 15-minute stay in Andermatt is via the Goms and Brig to Visp and offers a connection to the regional train to Disentis in Andermatt .
