List of train stations in Switzerland |
The Lugano railway station is the station of the Swiss Federal Railways in the city of Lugano and is a station of the Gotthard railway . It is also the starting point for the Lugano-Ponte-Tresa-Bahn (FLP) and the Lugano – Bahnhof SBB funicular railway , which connects it with the city center below. Lugano train station is the only train station in the city of Lugano. The SBB stop with the name Lugano-Paradiso is located in the independent municipality of Paradiso .
history
The age of the railroad began in Lugano in 1874, when the Ticino valley railways had their starting point for the route to Chiasso . In 1882, with the opening of the summit tunnels on the Gotthard and the Ceneri, the Gotthard Railway went into operation . First, on April 10, 1882, the Lugano train station became a transit station when the line via Ceneri to Bellinzona was extended before continuous operation could begin on June 1 of the same year. A funicular has been connecting the elevated station with the Lugano city center since 1886. The two cars need around two minutes for the 220-meter route. In 1909, the station became the connecting station for the Lugano-Tesserete Railway, which was discontinued in 1967 . The meter-gauge railway had its own station building on the edge of the station square. In 1912, the Lugano-Ponte-Tresa Railway, which is still in service today, was followed by a second meter -gauge railway - both had a track connection to one another. The FLP station is located in a cut below the station square. The Lugano tram also served the station. In 1998 the station underwent extensive renovation work under the direction of the architect Aurelio Galfetti . The station and the funicular of the TPL were renewed in 2014-2016.
Plant and reception building
The SBB station has four tracks, the FLP two. Freight traffic is not handled, for this the goods station Lugano-Vedeggio was built in the 1970s, including a branch line from Taverne-Torricella . According to the timetable, the four platform tracks are mostly used according to the following scheme:
- Track 1: S10 to Chiasso and Albate-Camerlata
- Platform 2: Long-distance trains to Chiasso and Milano Centrale
- Platform 3: All long-distance trains in the direction of German-speaking Switzerland (also ending in Lugano)
- Track 4: S10 towards Castione / Biasca
The station building, which consists of several wings, is built in the style of other Gotthard train stations such as Arth-Goldau , Brunnen or Bellinzona . As part of extensive renovation work on the entire building, the facade has been kept in a red tone since 2014. Various SBB facilities can be found in the station, such as a travel center with a ticket counter and the Centro Medico.
traffic
Lugano is the second most important station for long-distance traffic in the canton of Ticino after Bellinzona. Also in regional traffic it is served by two lines of the S-Bahn Ticino , whose operational operation is carried out by TILO and FLP.

future
- As part of the second NEAT stage with the extension of the Ceneri base tunnel and the Bellinzona railway bypass, it was planned to withdraw the long-distance trains from the Bellinzona and Lugano stations and instead connect the two stops in a new Ticino Sud station near Camorino , which will be connected to S -Bahn trains would have been connected to Bellinzona and Lugano. In 2007, however, the SBB refrained from such plans and continue to provide for long-distance trains to stop at Bellinzona and Lugano stations.
- With the construction of a new tram network in Lugano, the FLP is to be integrated into it and given a different route in the urban area of Lugano. It is unclear whether the previous lines will be retained. Lugano station would be connected to the network with an underground stop.
