List of train stations in Italy |
The Como San Giovanni railway station is the main station in the northern Italian city of Como and the larger of the two main stations next to Como Lago . It is operated by the state-owned Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and is the last Italian train station on the route to Chiasso . Thus Como has the function of a border station. It is owned by the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), an organizational unit of the Ferrovie dello Stato . From 2001 to 2018, the Centostazioni company was responsible for marketing and leasing the retail space . The station is served by trains from Trenitalia , Trenord , SBB and the joint venture TILO .
The station is west of the city center and is on the Chiasso – Milan railway line . It is also the starting point of the Como – Lecco railway line , which does not leave the above line until after the Albate-Camerlata station south of San Giovanni on the left.
investment
The through station has five tracks, four of which are available for passenger traffic. Track 1 is also the house platform, tracks 2 and 3 have a central platform, which is connected to the house platform by an underpass. Track 4, on the other hand, is seldom used, it is connected by means of a small platform between it and track 3, in order to reach it, it is necessary to cross track 3. Furthermore, there are three end tracks south of the reception building, which serve traffic to Lecco , and two more end tracks are also north of the building.
In addition to the usual station facilities (counters), the station is also equipped with a customs office because of the border crossing to Chiasso, but there have been no customs controls here since 2008, as Switzerland has joined the Schengen Agreement .
On the station forecourt there is a bus station of the SPT, which operates lines to Cernobbio , Bellagio or Menaggio , among others .
history
Como San Giovanni station was opened in 1875 when the Albate-Camerlata-Como section of today's Chiasso-Milan line was opened to traffic. In September 1876, it received the status of a border station when the line through Monte Olimpino was extended to Chiasso in Switzerland . The station there had been connected to the Ticino valley rail network since 1874 . With the opening of the Gotthard tunnel in 1882, Como became part of the important north-south axis, as the railway line between Chiasso and Milan was one of the southern feeders of the Gotthard Railway. In 1888 the railway line to Lecco was put into operation from Albate , but the trains were tied through to Como San Giovanni from the beginning.
During the Second World War , the station building was destroyed and replaced by a new building designed by the architect Paolo Perilli , which was opened for use in 1949. In 2008, the facility was renovated in cooperation between CentoStazioni and RFI . Among other things, the train station was made accessible for the disabled and equipped with a guidance system for the blind . New elevators were also installed.
traffic
The station is served by Trenord and TILO trains, and one line each of the S-Bahn Ticino and S-Bahn Milan stops.
