The liberation of Khorramshahr was the recapture of the city of Khorramshahr by Iranian forces during the Iran-Iraq war on May 24, 1982. Khorramshahr had been under Iraqi control since the battle of Khorramshahr . The liberation of the city is considered a turning point in the course of the war.
The battle
As part of Operation Beit ol-Moqaddas 70,000 Iranian soldiers invaded the area occupied by Iraqi troops province in April 1982 Khuzestan before. The Iraqis withdrew to Khorramshahr and launched a counter-attack from there on May 20, 1982, which was however repulsed. The Iranians then blocked all roads leading out of the city and, in turn, began a siege. Just four days later, on May 24, 1982, the city was officially under Iranian control again.
aftermath
After the defeat in Khorramshahr and the loss of several divisions, Saddam Hussein wanted to end the war and offered Iran peace negotiations, which was rejected by the Iranian side. Iraqi troops withdrew from Iranian territory via the Shatt al-Arab .
