Operation Scorch Sword (German Operation Burning Sword ) is the name of a military operation by the Iranian Air Force against the Iraqi nuclear reactor Osirak under construction on September 30, 1980, at the beginning of the First Gulf War . This was the first military attack on a nuclear power plant (though not yet filled with fissile material) .
Four McDonnell F-4s , which were refueled in the air off the Iraqi border , flew under the Iraqi radar control in formation flight (which was disbanded shortly before the target). Two Iranian F-4s bombed parts of the plant, two bombs are said to have hit the dome of the reactor and damaged the plant's cooling system. An Iranian pilot is quoted as saying: "With the minor damage, one could have thrown a sack of stones at the Iraqis".
