The operation Prime Chance , led by USSOCOM was an operation against Iran in the years 1987 to 1989 in the Persian Gulf . Its objective was to protect US-flagged tankers from Iranian air and sea attacks.

The operation involved units from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) , US Navy Seals , Special Boat Units , some conventional units from the USMC , the 4th Squadron of the 17th Cavalry and the 18th Aviation Brigade (Corps) (Airborne) . The following ships from the US Navy supported the operation: USS La Salle (AGF 3) , USS Jarrett (FFG 33) , USS Klakring (FFG 42) . In addition, the two drilling platforms Hercules and Wimbrown VII should be used. The plan to use two drilling platforms in the conflict raised military concerns as they were difficult to defend due to their size and location. However, concerns were dropped when it was realized that the Iranian armed forces lost many aircraft in the course of the First Gulf War . The aim of the operation was to stop Iranian mine- layers who were mining the shipping routes between Kuwait and the Indian Ocean.

The US Navy's Operation Earnest Will , which was running in parallel, had a similar task to Prime Chance .
