Operation Dawn 3 (Persian Valfajr 3 ; in English literature mostly translated as Operation Dawn 3 ) was the worst defeat Iran suffered in the 1983 war against Iraq . About 150,000 Iranian soldiers took part in this attack, who were repulsed by the Iraqi defenders, who operated from the trenches . They launched a counterattack and captured Mehran . Despite the high motivation of the Iranian troops, they were poorly trained and not adequately equipped. The operation was a disaster for Iran.
