Milton Sayler

Milton Sayler (born November 4, 1831 in Lewisburg , Ohio , † November 17, 1892 in New York City , New York ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1873 to 1879 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the first  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Milton Sayler was born in Lewisburg. There he attended public schools. He graduated from Miami University with a law degree in 1852 . He was admitted to the bar and opened a law firm in Cincinnati . In 1862 and 1863 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . He sat on the Cincinnati City Council in 1864 and 1865.

In the congressional elections in 1872 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a representative of the 1st District of Ohio. He sat for a total of three legislative terms in the House of Representatives. During his time in the House, he was chairman (chairman) of the United States House Committee on Public Lands (now United States House Committee on Natural Resources). He lost his seat in the 1878 congressional election to his Republican rival Benjamin Butterworth . Sayler moved to New York City to return to practice as a lawyer.

He died in New York City in 1892. His body was interred in Spring Grove Cemetery , Cincinnati.

His cousin Henry B. Sayler sat for the Indiana House of Representatives from 1873 to 1875 .
