from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The election to the United States House of Representatives in 1872 took place from June 4, 1872. The House of Representatives was elected on various election days in the United States . The majority of states voted on November 5, 1872. The election was part of the general election to the 43rd United States Congress that year, in which one-third of the US Senators were also elected. At the same time, the presidential election of 1872 took place, which was won by the Republican incumbent Ulysses S. Grant .

At the time of the election, the United States consisted of 37 states. The number of MPs to be elected was 292. The distribution of seats was based on the 1870 census . This also resulted in an increase in the number of seats from 243 to 292.

The Republicans won the election. With 199 seats they achieved a two-thirds majority. On the flip side, the Democrats couldn't even benefit from the increase in seats. They even lost 16 seats and only got 88 seats. The reason for this was the hope of many voters for an economic and industrial upswing, which they believed above all the Republicans. In most of the southern states, the Republicans were also able to win many seats through the votes of the African-Americans.

Only men were entitled to vote and eligible for election. Women were still banned from voting at the federal level until 1920.

The results of the last election two years earlier are in brackets. Changes during the legislative period that do not affect the elections as such are not included in these figures, but are noted in the article on the 43rd Congress in the section on the members of the House of Representatives under the relevant names of the representatives. The same applies to elections in states that did not join the Union until after the beginning of the legislative period. As a result, the sources sometimes contain different information, as changes during the legislative period were sometimes incorporated into the figures and sometimes not.
