  • The election for the United States House of Representatives took place on November 4, 2008. The presidential and Senate elections also took place on the same day . In addition, there were gubernatorial elections in 11 states . Overall, a high turnout was expected. In the 2006 election , the Democrats won a majority of 233 seats while the Republicans had 202 seats.

    Special elections in the previous legislative period

    In the 2007/08 legislative period, special elections were held in 10 constituencies because the incumbent resigned or died. In 6 the Republicans, in 4 the Democrats, the incumbent. In total, the Democrats were able to win 3 Republican seats.

    Predictions before the election

    According to the polling institute Congressional Quarterly (CQ) Inc. 199 seats were safe for Democrats and 147 for Republicans.
