Elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2008
The election for the United States House of Representatives took place on November 4, 2008. The presidential and Senate elections also took place on the same day . In addition, there were gubernatorial elections in 11 states . Overall, a high turnout was expected. In the 2006 election , the Democrats won a majority of 233 seats while the Republicans had 202 seats.
Special elections in the previous legislative period
In the 2007/08 legislative period, special elections were held in 10 constituencies because the incumbent resigned or died. In 6 the Republicans, in 4 the Democrats, the incumbent. In total, the Democrats were able to win 3 Republican seats.
Predictions before the election
According to the polling institute Congressional Quarterly (CQ) Inc. 199 seats were safe for Democrats and 147 for Republicans. A Democratic victory was likely in 12 constituencies and a Republican victory in 19 constituencies. In each of the other 21 constituencies, the Democratic candidate was ahead of the Republican candidate in polls. In summary, the Democrats were in the lead in 232 constituencies and the Republicans in 187 constituencies. The result in 16 constituencies was uncertain.
