Election to the United States House of Representatives 1822

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the election to the United States House of Representatives in 1822, the House of Representatives was elected on various election days in the United States from July 1, 1822 . The election was part of the general election for the 18th United States Congress that year, in which a third of the US senators were elected. Since the elections took place around the middle of the second four-year term of office of President James Monroe ( midterm election ), they were also considered a vote on the previous policy of the president.

At the time of the election, the United States consisted of 24 states ( Missouri was added as a new state). The number of MPs to be elected was 213. The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1820 census . This also results in an increase in the number of MPs. The first election result shown below reflects the proportion of votes between the Democratic-Republican Party and the Federalist Party, but is not meaningful because both parties were in a state of dissolution. The federalists disbanded after this election and no longer stood as a party in congressional elections. The Democratic Republican Party split into several wings that competed against each other in elections. Two of these wings later became the Democratic Party and the National Republican Party or the Whig Party . The list below gives the more meaningful results according to the individual groupings. The election of 1822 ushered in a decade of major domestic tensions. This also ended the so-called era of good feeling that had defined the previous years.

Women and slaves were neither eligible nor eligible to vote. Free African Americans were also excluded from voting in many states . The right to vote for free men was also tied to a certain property or tax revenue.
