Election to the United States House of Representatives in 1936

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On November 3, 1936, the House of Representatives in the United States was elected. In the state of Maine , the elections took place on September 14th. The election was part of the general election for the 75th United States Congress that year, which also elected a third of US Senators . The 1936 presidential election , won by Democratic incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt , also took place at the same time .

At the time of the election, the United States consisted of 48 states. The number of MPs to be elected was 435. The distribution of seats was based on the 1930 census .

In the election, the Democrats expanded their two-thirds majority by a further 12 seats and now had 334 seats, which was a three-quarters majority. The Republicans lost 15 seats and now only had 88 congressmen. In addition to the two major parties, the Progressive Party (8 seats) and the Farmer Labor Party (5) , which were only running in the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota , were represented in the House of Representatives. For the fourth time in a row since 1930, the Democrats recorded gains. The number of 334 MPs for one party in the House of Representatives has not been reached again until today (2016). The Democratic election result for the House of Representatives is a record that is still valid today. As in 1934, the Democratic election victory was primarily a vote for the New Deal policy of the Federal Government under President Franklin Roosevelt. Voters had significantly more confidence in this policy, which at that time also led to a noticeable economic recovery, than in the Republican election program. As before, the Republican Federal Government under then President Herbert Hoover was held responsible for the Great Depression that began in 1929.

In the southern states in particular, the right to vote was restricted by laws that linked the right to vote to a certain tax revenue. As a result, poor whites, but above all many African-Americans, were excluded from the right to vote. These restrictions lasted until the 24th Amendment to the United States Constitution was passed in 1964.

Election result

Total: 435 (435)

The results of the last election two years earlier are in brackets. Changes during the legislative period that do not affect the elections are not included in these figures, but are noted in the article on the 75th Congress in the section on the members of the House of Representatives under the relevant names of the representatives. The same applies to elections in states that joined the Union after the beginning of the legislative period. As a result, the sources sometimes contain different information, as changes during the legislative period were sometimes incorporated into the figures and sometimes not.
