A total of 435 seats

On November 8, 1988, the United States ' House of Representatives was elected. The election was part of the general election for the 101st United States Congress that year, which also elected a third of US Senators . At the same time, the 1988 presidential election , won by Republican George HW Bush , took place.

The number of MPs to be elected was 435. The distribution of seats was based on the 1980 census .

Despite the clear election victory of Republican George Bush Sr. in the presidential election, Republicans did not benefit from it in the House of Representatives election. In the elections, there was even a slight win for the Democrats, who took 2 seats from the Republicans compared to the 1986 elections. This increased their absolute majority to 260 mandates. Viewed nationwide, however, these changes are rather insignificant. Like two years earlier, voters in 1988 did not want any major changes, at least in the House of Representatives. Since the Democrats were able to easily increase their majority in the Senate, the new president had to deal with democratic majorities in both chambers of congress.

The results of the last election two years earlier are in brackets. Changes during the legislative period that do not affect the elections themselves are not included in these figures, but are noted in the article on the 101st Congress in the section on the members of the House of Representatives under the appropriate names of the representatives. As a result, the sources sometimes contain different information, as changes during the legislative period were sometimes incorporated into the figures and sometimes not. The election result shown is based on the source below (Party Divisions).
