A total of 435 seats

The 1972 election to the United States House of Representatives took place on November 7, 1972. The election was part of the general election to the 93rd United States Congress that year, in which a third of the US Senators were elected. The 1972 presidential election , won by the Republican incumbent Richard Nixon , was held at the same time .

The number of MPs to be elected was 435. The distribution of seats was based on the 1970 census . The voting age was lowered to 18 for the first time in accordance with the 26th Amendment to the United States Constitution .

The Democrats now lost 12 seats, two years earlier they had won 12 seats, but were able to maintain their absolute majority with 243 seats. Conversely, the Republicans gained 12 seats. That brought them to 192 congressmen. The majority ratio of 243 Democrats to 192 Republicans was the same as after the 1968 election . Campaign issues continued to be the unpopular Vietnam War and the racial unrest in many American cities. The Republicans' gain was mainly due to the increased popularity of President Nixon, who was clearly confirmed in office this year.
