The 1974 election to the United States House of Representatives took place on November 5, 1974. The House of Representatives was elected in the United States . The election was part of the general election for the 94th United States Congress . That year a third of the US Senators were also elected.

The number of MPs to be elected was 435. The distribution of seats by state was based on the 1970 census .

The Democrats won the election. With a gain of 48 seats, they now had 291 mandates. That was a seat over a two-thirds majority. The Republicans, who only had 144 congressmen, lost accordingly. In addition to the economic crisis in the early 1970s, the main reason for this was the Watergate affair , which also forced Republican President Richard Nixon to resign in August 1974 and which seriously damaged the Republicans. This resulted in massive losses in all major elections of 1974 . In the eyes of the voters, Nixon's pardon by his successor Gerald Ford weighed particularly heavily .
