from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On November 5, 1968, the United States ' House of Representatives was elected. The election was part of the general election for the 91st United States Congress that year, which also elected a third of US Senators . The 1968 presidential election , won by Republican Richard Nixon , also took place at the same time .

The number of MPs to be elected was 435. The distribution of seats was based on the 1960 census .

In the elections, the Democrats lost 5 seats compared to the last election in 1966. Nevertheless, they were able to maintain their absolute majority with 243 seats. The Republicans won 5 seats and now came to 192 congressmen. Campaign themes were the unpopular Vietnam War and the race riots in many American cities. There were also some spectacular political murders in the run-up to the election, such as B. to Robert F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King . The assassination of Kennedy in particular hurt the Democrats in that it dropped their likely presidential candidate and made it easier for Republican Richard Nixon to become president. The changes in the House of Representatives were rather insignificant when both parties spoke out in favor of continuing the war on one of the main issues, the Vietnam War.
