The Arsenal VG-70 was a French swept wing test aircraft belonging to the Arsenal de l'Aéronautique .

history

The aircraft took off on its maiden flight on June 23, 1948. The VG-70 was a direct derivative of the German Messerschmitt P.1092 , which was designed as a project from 1943, but was never built. The clear similarity of both designs, the comparable dimensions and the use of a German Jumo 004 jet engine suggest this conclusion. In addition, in 1943 the Messerschmitt employees carried out wind tunnel tests with the P.1092 in the French wind tunnel Chalais-Meudon. Documents for this project must have been available to French designers after the war, such as Jean Galtier , who later designed the Nord 1500 Griffon II .

construction

The VG-70 was a cantilevered mid-decker in all-metal construction with a retractable three-wheel chassis. The engine was largely housed in the fuselage below the wings. The air inlet was crescent-shaped and began behind the cockpit on the lower side of the fuselage. The cockpit and nose landing gear were housed in the very slim forward fuselage. The normal tail formed the end of the fuselage. The broad-gauge main landing gear was attached to the wings and drove inward into the surfaces. The wings, swept at 35 °, largely corresponded to Messerschmitt's designs at the time.
