The A 36 motorway , also known as La Comtoise , is a 237 km long French motorway that connects the cities of Beaune , Dole , Besançon , Montbéliard , Belfort and Mulhouse and continues on to Ottmarsheim on the German A 5 . The operating company is the APRR (Autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône), which is why most of the motorway is subject to tolls. The motorway crosses the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Grand Est regions . It generally runs in the direction of west-south-west-east-north-east and thus serves both north-south traffic from Germany to Lyon , Marseille and Spain and east-west traffic from the Paris area to Switzerland and southern Germany.

Route

The starting point is the A 36 at Ladoix-Serrigny on the A 31 motorway a few kilometers north of the Beaune junction, where the A 31 and the A 6 (Autoroute du Soleil) meet. It initially runs to the east and crosses the mostly wooded Saône plain. The junction with the A 39 , which connects the cities of Dijon and Bourg-en-Bresse , is near Dole . The motorway then leads through a gently undulating landscape until it reaches the Besançon agglomeration. For the next 80 kilometers, the motorway runs through a hilly area in the extreme northwestern foothills of the Jura , mostly parallel to the Doubstal , with the river being crossed at Clerval . In this section, the traffic axis overcomes several steep gradients, which shortly afterwards turn back into descents.

South of Montbéliard, the A 36 crosses the Doubs again, enters the relatively flat country of the Burgundian Gate and passes the densely populated and heavily industrialized area of the Montbéliard basin. The motorway now turns straight north for a distance of around 15 kilometers, running in the wide valley basin of the Savoureuse , before reaching Belfort. This city is bypassed in the southeast. This is again followed by a paid overland route along the southern foot of the Vosges . Finally the motorway reaches the Upper Rhine Plain . It affects the city of Mulhouse and leads through its northern outskirts. East of Mulhouse, it crosses the A 35 motorway (Strasbourg-Basel) and then crosses the Harthwald . The last exit on French territory is Ottmarsheim . Immediately after this exit is the former Ottmarsheim customs facility, which has since been dismantled. Then the A 36 leads over a Rhine canal bridge ( Grand Canal d'Alsace ) and the Rhine bridge Ottmarsheim . The latter forms the state border between France and Germany. The continuation of the A 36 on German soil was formerly known as the A 862 . The only 400 m long section to the confluence with the A 5 (Frankfurt-Basel) no longer has its own name.

history

As the first section of the A 36 motorway, the section from Montbéliard to Étupes in the area of the Peugeot factories was opened in 1968 (from today's exit 8 to 9). The trunk line between Besançon and Mulhouse was opened in several stages in the second half of the 1970s, while the connection in the southwest from Dampierre to Beaune (A 31) and in the northeast from Mulhouse to the German BAB 5 was not made until the beginning of the 1980s Was put into operation. Various junction points (Dampierre, Besançon-Palente, Voujeaucourt and Fontaine) were built much later and therefore had to be integrated into the exit number system at a later date.

Traffic volume and standard of development

The A 36 motorway has the lowest traffic volumes in the section from the A 31 (Ladoix-Serrigny) to Dole with only around 10,000 vehicles per day. Overland routes between Dole and Montbéliard are used by around 25,000 vehicles on average each day. High traffic volumes can be observed in the Montbéliard-Belfort and Mulhouse agglomeration areas. On the busiest sections near Mulhouse, an average daily traffic of more than 80,000 vehicles is achieved.

The A 36 has four lanes (2 × 2). Strong inclines, especially in the hilly area between Besançon and Montbéliard, are equipped with an additional lane for slow vehicles. The heavily used section from the A 36 / A 35 motorway junction to exit 18 (Mulhouse-Center) has been expanded to six lanes. The expansion is planned to continue up to junction 16 (Mulhouse-Les Coteaux). In addition, the Belfort-Center - Montbéliard section was expanded to six lanes and the Montbéliard - Vojeaucourt section in the direction of Besançon to three lanes by 2013. Between Audincourt and Montbéliard, four lanes are available in the direction of Belfort through the interlacing strip.

toll

The following two sections of the A 36 motorway are subject to tolls:

  • Burnhaupt - Belfort-Est (exit 14 to 15, exit 14.1: Paying point): This 24 km long section is an open toll system (a lump sum is charged depending on the vehicle class); the toll booth is at Fontaine-Larivière.
  • From the A 31 to Voujeaucourt: closed toll system (the amount of the toll depends on the distance traveled)
