List of federal motorways in Germany
The German federal highways are numbered according to a clear system. A numbering system for federal motorways has existed since the mid-1970s, which roughly specifies which number a new federal motorway will receive. Federal motorways with a one-digit number (e.g. A1) are of national or even cross-border importance. Federal motorways with two digits as a number (e.g. A 20) are generally of overriding regional importance. Federal motorways with three digits as a number (e.g. A 999) are usually of regional or urban importance. Often these federal highways are feeders or bypasses.
In the case of federal motorways with more than one digit as a number, the first digit indicates the approximate location of the federal motorway:
- 1 = Greater Berlin, Leipzig-Halle, Dresden,
- 2 = Greater Hamburg area,
- 3 = Greater Hanover / Bielefeld / Osnabrück,
- 4 = Greater Ruhr area / Kassel / Rhineland-Palatinate,
- 5 = Cologne area,
- 6 = Greater Frankfurt am Main,
- 7 = Greater Schweinfurt / Nuremberg / Erfurt,
- 8 = Greater Stuttgart area,
- 9 = Greater Munich area.
With the exception of southern Germany, the distribution is analogous to the distribution of the first digit of the four-digit postcodes valid until 1993 in Germany .
As a rule, federal motorways with an even end digit run predominantly in a west-east direction, those with an uneven end digit in a north-south direction. Exceptions to this are e.g. B. the A 14 and the A 15.
