List of highways in Hungary
The Hungarian motorway network consists of several routes running from the capital Budapest to all regions of Hungary .
The motorways are designated with the letter M (for " Magyar ", and not for " Motorway ") and a number. The Hungarian name for "motorway" is autópálya . There is a speed limit of 130 km / h on Hungarian motorways and many routes are toll roads. Exceptions existed until July 1, 2013 on sections of the route around larger cities, for example Tatabánya and Győr bypass on M1 , Budapest bypass : M0 and M31 .
history
There are currently around 1,480 km of motorways and expressways in Hungary . The first planning for motorways in Hungary dates back to 1942.
In 1964 the first M7 motorway from Budapest to Lake Balaton was completed. Later construction began to Tatabánya , Győr and towards Vienna.
The transport concept from 1968 was still created with a network of eight main roads. The municipality development concept from 1971 had the idea that the eight radial roads and the additional Sopron and North Balaton roads should contain the next large ring elements: the M0 ring, southern and eastern sectors, a Győr- Veszprém - Székesfehérvár - Dunaföldvár - Kecskemét - Szolnok (today Autópálya M8 ) and Eger "inner" ring, and each element is an "outer" ring, Sopron - Szombathely - Nagykanizsa - Balaton - Kaposvár - Pécs - Baja - Szeged and Gyula - Berettyoujfalu - Debrecen - Nyíregyháza sections. A total of 500 km of motorway was supposed to be built by 1985, but only 302 km were completed.
Significantly more motorways were built after the borders were opened. Hungary has a radial motorway network with the center Budapest: M1 ; M2 ; M3 ; M4 ; M5 ; M6 ; M7 and one outer ring: M9 .
As the European Capital of Culture , Pécs has its own M6 and M60 motorways . In 2007 Romania became part of the European Union , and the new M43 motorway was added due to the increased truck traffic . Additional routes are planned to connect the other major cities in the country.
The construction of the motorway sections that are most affected by European transit traffic is currently underway. The aim is to improve the Hungarian and Central European car transport routes and the connection of industrial plants.
Bridges and viaducts
There are currently four motorway bridges over the Danube , two of them in Budapest on the M0, one in Dunaújváros on the M8 and at Szekszárd on the M9. Two bridges were built over the Tisza , at Polgár (M3) and at Szeged (M43), two are under construction in the Szolnok bypass ( M4 ) and one in Lakitelek near ( M44 ).
The longest viaduct is on the south side of Lake Balaton , the Köröshegy valley bridge is 1,870 m long and 79.70 m high. The M6 has four twin-tube tunnels, including the Bátaszéktunnel with a length of 1331 m. Further tunnels are planned in Ödenburg ( M85 ) (780 m), in Budapest West Bypass ( M0 ) (2,020 m and 3,190 m), in Misefa ( M9 ) (1,030 m).
toll
For the first time in Hungary, during the regime change, the idea of charging motorways arose. By the end of the 1990s, the charging system based on direct barriers had become more prominent. After 2000, however, it was replaced by a rental system known as a sticker, which, due to negative experiences, allowed the entire network to be used. Nowadays the outdated, barrier-free toll collection has been abolished everywhere, and the entire motorway network is part of the vignette system on motorways and expressways.
For all vehicles under 3.5 tonnes (excluding motorcycles), the fees are levied through a vignette system (annual vignette 2020: 42,980 forints, 1-month vignette: 4,780 forints, 10-day vignette: 3,500 forints). On July 1, 2014, adhesive vignettes were replaced by electronic vignettes (called "E-Matrica") that can be purchased online, via a smartphone app and at selected business locations (e.g. petrol stations, border crossings).
On July 1, 2013, the vignette system was replaced by route-based truck tolls (called "HU-GO") based on GPS (similar to the Austrian GO-Box ) for all vehicles over 3.5 tons.
From January 1, 2015, nationwide stickers as well as the previously used nationwide stickers were introduced for all categories D1, D2, B2 and U, which can be used for one year for all toll roads in a certain district.
Exceptions to the vignette requirement are: motorway introductory sections through Budapest on M1-M7, M3 and M5, most of the Budapest ring road (except between M5 and M4) and single-lane parts of the M8 and M9.
