Autópálya M1 ( Hungarian for 'Motorway M1') is an east-west motorway in Hungary and part of European roads 60 , 65 and 75 . It begins in the west of the state capital Budapest and leads past Tatabánya , Győr and ends at Hegyeshalom on the state border with Austria . There it connects to the Ost Autobahn (A4).

The M1 provides a direct road connection from Budapest with the capitals of Austria , Vienna , and Slovakia , Bratislava (via M15 ). Therefore it is one of the most important highways in Hungary.

The total length of the road is 171 kilometers.

history

State-built sections

The first 12 km section of the M7 motorway was built in 1964. In Törökbálint from 1973 the left lane on the hard shoulder was rated and in 1978 the right lane was put into operation.

From the Tatabánya -Nord exit to the Komárom exit , the left side of the line was completed in 1975. The route to the Győr -Ost exit (kilometer 105) was opened to traffic in 1977.

The section of the M1, which was built in Budaörs in 1964 and also the M7, was expanded from 1977 to 1978 with two bars to its current width.

Between the kilometers 12 and 16, the right lane was completed between 1979 and 1981. In 1982 the motorway was widened to the full width of the road between kilometers 38 and 66. In 1985 the sections from kilometer 25 to 38 and in 1987 from 16 to 25 were completed. In 1990 the missing right-hand road from kilometers 66 to 105 was built.

Sections built in concession

In 1991 Hungary was given the right to organize the 1996 World's Fair. The agreement made it necessary to complete the M1 motorway as soon as possible. However, due to the looming economic crisis, the country did not have the resources to build the road. Therefore a tender for private investors was carried out. On April 13, 1993, the state signed a contract with the private investor who established the First Hungarian Concession Motorway Rt. The new company has acquired the right to operate the carriageway for 35 years.

In 1996 the motorway was fully completed. This was the first section of the motorway in Hungary where green bridges were built.

  • E 75 : M15 motorway junction - M0 motorway junction

Traffic volume

The importance of the expressway has increased since the regime change in 1990 and is now Hungary's most important western connection. Sections near Budapest are among the busiest roads in Hungary.
